Redhead, Veteran's Oasis Park, Chandler, Arizona - E.J. Peiker

"Redheads are not common in my hometown of Chandler, Arizona in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Usually I have to travel about 90 minutes southeast to Tucson for a reliable place to photograph them. In December 2009, a friend sent me a note that some Redheads had been spotted in Veteran's Oasis Park, a new water discharge facility and riparian area which is within walking distance of my house. I photographed these birds for three days before they left and moved onward in their migration. This drake was captured early one Sunday morning. The camera was lowered as close to the ground as possible to put the viewer at eye level with this beautiful subject. As he was swimming slowly in my general direction, I waited until he turned his head to capture the full view of his face."

Equipment Used: Nikon D300, 500mm VR, 1.4x; ISO 400, 1/320, f/8, Gitzo 3530LSV, Wimberley WH-2, Nikon SB-900

Greg Downing on Ducks of North America - The Photographer's Guide:
"A decade ago E.J. and I met while photographing birds during spring migration in Pt. Pelee, Canada. Instantly we became friends and photography buddies. Over the years I have witnessed, and been fascinated by, E.J.'s particular passion with Ducks. If you thought bird photography was a specialty, E.J. has carved a niche for himself that no one else can touch in capturing these beautiful water-bound birds.

One of the goals E.J. set for himself during the last decade was to photograph every Duck species found in North America - a tall order for anyone. He has not only accomplished that goal but has done it with skill and artistry.

E.J.'s new ebook "Ducks of North America - The Photographers Guide" is a celebration of this monumental accomplishment and includes stunning array of images and detailed species accounts of all the native species found in North America, as well as visitors and captives. But this guide goes far beyond Ducks and how to photograph them. The depth of equipment and field techniques shared in this guide rivals many of the classic how-to books on general nature and bird photography. E.J. covers all the bases from gear recommendations to exposure, outdoor flash, composition, capturing action and beyond. "This is a must have guide for anyone interested in photographing birds and especially ducks! -Greg Downing

Must Have Items for Quick Fixes in the Field
by Bret Edge

Generally speaking, nature photographers aren't known for traveling light. We've got tripods, ballheads, lenses, cameras, filters, flashes and reflectors, not to mention backpacks, headlamps, tents, sleeping bags and the myriad items required to hike into the backcountry. If you spend enough time exploring the great outdoors with all this stuff on your back, sooner or later, something will break. If you're... Read full article >

Small Format-Photographing the Landscape with a Point and Shoot Camera
by Darren Huski

Ask a group of photographers what is the best camera for photographing the landscape and you will probably see a Canon vs. Nikon debate erupt. If they agree on anything it is probably that you "must" have a full frame DSLR to be a landscape photographer, cropped sensor cameras and anything smaller are just not good enough. They would probably laugh at the idea of a using point and shoot. Read full article >

Monsoon Light
by Alex Mody

This past summer, I traveled and photographed for two weeks in Northern Arizona, chasing after the dramatic skies that so enthusiastically present themselves in tandem with the monsoon thunderstorms and intense 100+ degree heat. Simply put, the monsoon is a daily series of extremely powerful and isolated low-pressure systems that begin to build around midday, caused by the extreme heat... Read full article >

Preparation In Fine Art Landscape Photography
Part 2 of 2: Preparation Checklist
by Alain Briot

In the second installment of this two part essay we are going to look at the gear you take with you in the field and at what you do once you are in the field. This second part is presented as a checklist so that you can print it to refer to it in the field if you want. I kept the text to a minimum to make this checklist as concise as possible. You may also read Part One if you haven't already. Read full article >

Making a Complex Photo Mask with a Pen Tablet
by Jeff Colburn

I recently purchased a Wacom Bamboo pen tablet to use in retouching photographs and doing photo manipulation. The tablet would make these chores much faster and easier than using my laptop's touchpad, which is what I've used for years. I had my chance to really test my new tool when I had to create a complex mask for a photograph I made at the Gold King Mine and Ghost Town... Read full article >

MacBook Air Comparison
by Kah Kit Yoong

In an attempt to shed a bit of weight off my carry-on luggage, I purchased an 'Ultimate' edition Macbook Air to replace one of my current MacBook Pros. For the record I usually bring two notebook computers on my trips, just in case one fails - it would be disastrous not to be able to download each day and would adversely affect my work not to be able to review images. To give you an idea of what... Read full article >
