Mid-summer Evening in the Land of the Midnight Sun - Carl Donohue

"On a 2 week trip through the Arctic National Wildlife refuge, I took a relatively short hike from camp to photograph this small kettle pond and the expansive coastal plain. I brought my flute along to play after I'd finished my photography. Then I thought that might make a nice shot, so I set the camera on a tripod and used the self-timer to take the photo."

Watch Carl's video ANWR - 50 Years of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to see some amazing photos commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Equipment Used: Nikon D2x, Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 at 42mm, cable release, timer, Ancient Territories Walnut backpacker's flute, key of Eb, ISO 100, manual exposure, F8 @ 1.30sec, July, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska.

ANWR - Celebrating 50 Years of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
by Carl Donohue

50 photos for 50 years! Dec. 6, 2010, marks the 50th anniversary of the Arctic National Wildlife refuge, or ANWR. Over 19 million acres of wild lands, the refuge is a treasure, home to thousands of creatures and features; the caribou herds, the Brooks Mountains, the broad coastal plain, migratory birds and countless other gifts to this world. A beautiful landscape that warrants our respect, not our exploitation... Continue & watch video >

Backpackers organize gear into stuff sacks, pouches, and pockets to make packing a precise process and items easier to find as they are needed. It seems that Clik Elite, the company that makes performance packs for adventure photographers, took this tip from the backpacking world... Read full article >

Book Review: Decisive Moments - Creating Iconic Imagery by Scott Linstead
by Kari Post

For the most part, photography books can be divided into two categories - the artistic, coffee table style books and the informative, how to books. I am a big fan of coffee table style photography books. I have a fairly big collection of large hardback volumes with hundreds of stunning images of landscapes, wildlife, and other nature subjects. Most of these books are pretty to look at, many inspiring, but very few have... Read full article >

Where the Micro 4:3 Systems Fits
"I would be interested in comments from those that are using the Micro 4:3 systems and how they fit with their other systems like Canon and Nikon. Do you have specific uses for each? When you use the 4:3 system do you later wish you had taken the image with your bigger system? Do you use it primarily to reduce weight on hikes? Are you will to risk the quality of a great once in a life time picture to the 4:3 system?..." Read topic >

Does Camo Really Make a Difference?
"I've been thinking about getting some camo gear - both for me and my Canon 600mm f4 L IS, and was wondering whether there's any objective data that says that it really works. My wildlife photography is focused mainly on birds. I walk through the woods fairly often hunting for owls, hawks and whatever else I might stumble across. There's some little part of me that suspects that camo gear..." Read topic >

MacBook Air vs. MacBook Pro Performance
"As promised, I conducted some performance tests between the new MacBook Air and an identically configured MacBook Pro (with the exception of processor speed). This was done to determine if the newly upgraded MacBook Air, which now is much more like a MacBook Pro on paper, is a credible replacement in order to save 2.5lb. In short, the conclusion is that it most definitely is but of course there..." Read topic >
