Nā Pali Coast, Kauai, Hawaii - Greg Downing

With its unforgettable blend of multi-colored sea cliffs, fertile valleys and remote beaches this fifteen-mile stretch of rugged coastline on the northwest shore of Kauai literally means "the Cliffs." Much of the rugged coastline is inaccessible due to its characteristic sheer cliffs that drop thousands of feet into the ocean below. Exploring and photographing Nā Pali via an open-air door-less helicopter affords the photographer unprecedented and crystal clear opportunities to capture some of the most dramatic scenery on the entire Hawaiian island of Kauai. It's a photographic adventure most can only dream of, and one I won't soon forget!

Join Greg, along with E.J. Peiker, next spring and experience the Nā Pali coast via a private helicopter charter designed for photographers. Check the workshops section of NatureScapes for more info!

Equipment Used: EOS 5D, 24-105, 1/1600 @ f4, ISO 400 - shot hand held from an open air helicopter.

I know firsthand that photographic talent does not always equate to good people and teaching skills - that is where NatureScapes Certified Workshops will excel. Our pledge to you is to live up to the NatureScapes reputation and to offer the best workshop experience with the most talented leaders in the industry. Just as we have earned a reputation of professionalism and class through our online community and store, we'll leave our egos at home and cater to what your individual photographic needs are with professionalism, generosity and good humor!

Helicopter Photography Primer Helicopter Photography Primer
by E.J. Peiker

Many of the more beautiful and dramatic areas in the world offer helicopter tours to get a birds-eye view of the spectacular landscape. Helicopters are an excellent platform for photographing areas that might not otherwise be accessible from the ground. These tours tend to be expensive, so being properly prepared to make the most of the short time you have in the air is a key to not being disappointed with the results. Over the years I have been on numerous aerial photography adventures and have learned what works and what doesn't. Read full article >

Scenes from Louisiana, the BP Oil Disaster Scenes from Louisiana, the BP Oil Disaster
by Shawn Carey

On April 19, 2010 I, like most people, had never heard of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig. All that changed a day later when it exploded and killed eleven men, eventually sinking to the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico. As the oil started to gush into the ocean, my reaction was one of disbelief. I was horror-struck at the thought of how the birds and other wildlife along the Gulf Coast would be impacted. How long would oil continue to flow? How many gallons per day? For weeks no one seemed to have the answer. Days turned into... Read full article >

Fall for Autumn Photography Fall for Autumn Photography
by Bret Edge

With memories of alpine wildflowers in the not-too-distant past it’s almost impossible to believe that autumn is right around the corner. And yet, all the signs point to exactly that. Temperatures are trending lower, bears are focused on getting fatter and sunset is arriving earlier every day. If you ask me, I say, "Bring it on!" Something about fall brings out the best in me. Seeing an entire... Read full article >

Bird Photography Off the Beaten Path Bird Photography Off the Beaten Path
by Fabiola Forns

Bird photography is my passion and has been for many years now. There is nothing I enjoy more than finding a bird and then capturing an image of it, the way I had dreamed. Creating beautiful bird pictures can be very rewarding and sometimes I want to push the envelope a bit and create something out of the ordinary. Once you learn the basic rules for creating a successful bird image, it’s natural to... Read full article >

"I just returned this past Sunday from a week long trip to the Louisiana Gulf Coast. For the first five days I was with good friend, fellow photographer and police officer Alex Couter. We meet up with another local photographer Charlie Bush who use to live in Massachusetts and now makes is home in Houma, LA. This trip would not have been possible with out the help we received from Charlie." Read topic >

Canon announces 60D, *6* new L lenses, 2 new TCs
"60D is interesting - has an articulated LCD (first for Canon), and the price is pushed down to $1099. Definitely a more high-end consumer-oriented camera than the 7D. Lots of in-camera processing - can create 1920x1080 or 720x480 images in-camera for easy viewing on HD TVs or uploading to social sites..." Read topic >
