 June, 2012

Dear

greenhouseEvery morning this spring, I have risen with the sun and gone outside to my little greenhouse, where I practice yoga in the form of healing chants from the vedas (texts that were passed down orally for thousands of years). There's a blessing to the earth that brings strength to the little seedlings, a chant honouring the sun that nourishes the plants and my own ability to see clearly, a chant to the water that nourishes the creative forces, and a chant to the air that supports and nourishes prana, the energy of life itself.

After chanting, when it's been warm enough, I spread out my mat on the deck (if it's not warm enough, I go inside), facing the east, and practice sun salutations and other postures that bring life to my body and help me set a tone and intention for the day ahead.

gurudasana on the nahanniAfter a winter of practicing inside, it feels incredibly freeing to extend my limbs into the limitless space of the newborn day, and to feel the sun on my face, the earth under my feet, the cool morning air on my skin and sometimes the dew still sparkling on the grass.

Practicing yoga outside brings with it a connection to the elements that has the power to open my heart in profound and surprising ways...Click here to continue reading.

Summer Yoga Classes - Sign up Now!

While I'm away teaching yoga and guiding in the NWT, B.C. and Algonquin Park this summer, there will be four classes at the studio with two fabulous yoga instructors.

Vicki Barkla will be teaching Monday's Vinyasa Flow and Gentle Yoga classes at 5:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. respectively. Many of you know Vicki as a teacher and student at Wavelenghts.  Vicki did her 500 hour training with Irene Beer in Peterborough and is just completing a further 200 hours of training at Wavelengths.  She also teaches yoga at Activity Haven in Peterborough.

Kathleen Herrold will be teaching two gentle yoga classes on Friday mornings.  For early birds from 7:00 - 8:00 a.m. and slightly later birds from 8:15 - 9:30 a.m.  Kathy has also taught at the studio in the past, running an early morning class in the fall.  Kathy is an experienced Kripalu trained yoga instructor, currently also teaching in Campbellford.

Welcome to both Vicki and Kathy.  I hope you'll join them for classes this summer.

The summer session runs for 6 weeks from July 9 - August 20, with no class on the Monday, August 6 civic holiday.  You can view the schedule here:  www.wavelengthsyoga.com/current_schedule.htm. You can register for classes by mail, in person, or on the website:  www.wavelengthsyoga.com/register_online.htm

We offer both 200 hour and 300 hour programs, which can be combined to receive a 500 hour certification, the highest level of certification recognized by Yoga Alliance. For those who have graduated from the 200 hour program, consider taking the additional 300 hours starting in September, 2013. Graduates from other schools' 200 hour courses may be required to complete an integration course to be considered for the 500 hour certification program.

The Heart of Asana

The Heart of Asana is a fabulous new book on asana (yoga postures) compiled by my teacher, Kausthub Desikachar, with Sangeetha Kannan (my Internship Supervisor at the KYM in India).

This reference book catalogues over 250 yoga postures, including the origin, classification, and sequencing (vinyasa krama) for each.

It is an invaluable resource for the yoga teacher as well as student of yoga.

You can purchase your copy of this hard-cover, 560 page manual now.  The cost is $50, plus HST ($56.50) total).

northern edge yoga

Join me for a 4 day retreat just outside Algonquin park.  The Northern Edge is a charming eco-retreat located on the west side of the park.  This retreat is for women only, and will be an opportunity to relax and renew, connect with nature, yourself, others and your inherent joy and happiness.

Please register as soon as possible if you're thinking of joining me for this retreat.  We need to confirm minimum numbers or we may have to cancel this retreat.

To learn more about this, and the other trips I'm leading this summer
(Canoeing on NWT's Nahanni River, and a Wild Yoga Retreat in remote Bella Coola, BC), visit our website.

Dates: August 23 - 26, 2012

Please email wavelengths@gmail.com for full trip description and pricing.

Did You Lose Something?

There's a bag of goodies hanging behind the front door of the studio, full of treasures that have been left behind.  Please check this bag to see if it contains any of your lost articles.  Anything left at the end of the month will be donated to charity.  Thanks!

I hope you get to practice your yoga outside sometime this summer!
