 April/2011
janusirasana
Dear

foolNo one wants to be seen as a fool, but the 1st of April is the time when we can allow ourselves to be foolish as well as play a good-natured joke on someone else.  For those who take themselves very seriously, this can either be a relief or an annoyance.  In any case, April Fool's Day reminds us to lighten up.

Osho, a spiritual guide and author, writes in his "Zen Tarot" book that ".A fool is one who goes on trusting...if you trust your intuition right now...you cannot go wrong.  Your actions may appear 'foolish' to others, or even to yourself, if you try to analyze them with the rational mind."  When our minds are clear, we can hear the voice of our own intuition.  It is difficult (some would say impossible) to have a mind that is completely free from outside influence, but a spiritual fool is one who continually drops the past so that it doesn't cloud the present.

He also writes, "...Be a fool in the Zen sense...Whatsoever experience comes to you, let it happen, and then go on dropping it.  Go on cleaning your mind continuously; go on dying to the past so you remain in the present, here-now, as if just born, just a babe."  Clearing the mind is what yoga is all about.  One of the definitions of yoga is that it is a state where the mind is completely focused (Yoga Sutra, I-2).

Osho's definition of a spiritual fool is similar to the goal of yoga practice, which is to establish that state of focus from moment to moment.  When we habitually follow our conditioning (based on the past) or what others tell us is "right," we are truly foolish.  But to be a fool in the spiritual sense is to leave behind those expectations and follow a deeper voice of wisdom, which can be accessed through a committed yoga practice.

This April, be a spiritual fool and sign up for another session of heart opening,
mind clearing and stress relieving yoga classes at Wavelengths.  Click here to see the schedule or register.
