Dear
Steven Page, addicted to indecision. |
A true Canadian, I glean much of my inspiration from CBC radio. And, today is no different as I sat down at my computer to write this newsletter.
I found myself humming along to Steven Page's (of Barenaked Ladies fame) song, "Indecision." In particular, I was struck by the line, "my addiction to indecision keeps me here." The lyrics speak of being stuck in a behaviour that doesn't serve the singer.
In yoga philosophy, these addictions to behavioural patterns are called samskara-s. Samskara-s are habits that we cling to, even when they no longer serve us. In the Yoga Sutras, we are offered a practical way to work with harmful patterns.
It would be an illusion to try to live without any habits at all. It is preferable to replace negative conditioning little by little with positive attitudes (Bouanchaud, B, The Essense of Yoga, Reflections on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Sutra I-50).
Regular yoga practice can help to build new, positive habits (Sutra III-9). When doing yoga, you're immersed in the activity of bringing your mind into focus, through your body and breath. A stable mind is able to see and let go of destructive patterns.
Seeing an addiction to a behaviour is an important first step in creating change. Then, every time the behaviour emerges, you're better able to recognize it and try something different.
Are you aware of what behaviours you're addicted to?
For more reflections on the Yoga Sutras, see the September/October issue of The Link (available free at hundreds of area locations or at www.the-link.ca), with a discussion on how to keep your mind clear and peaceful through specific behaviours. |

We have a new look! |
Coming soon, we'll have a fancy new sign on the studio building at 2351 Country Rd. 45 in Norwood. The sign was designed and created by PAn Trinity DAs, a Peterborough artist.
At the same time, we've changed the Wavelengths Logo to present a consistent image. So, the website, print ads and flyers will all have a similar look with the lotus design, new font and colours.
We're excited about the new look and hope you like it too. You can see the new logo at the top of this page. |
