Hike at Roger Perry Preserve and Stone Church 8/25/12
|
Join Naromi board members Marge Josephson, Chris Jellen and John Foley this Saturday to two close-by small preserves near Dover Plains, NY. Meet at 8:30 at the Sherman Library to carpool, or at 9 am at the Dover Elementary school parking lot (on Main Street (Route 22) across from the Firehouse at the south end of town of Dover Plains).
Dover Stone Church is a natural steep ravine that ends at a waterfall cave whose opening arched rock formation looks like a church. (Here is a Visitor's Guide published by the Oblong Land Conservancy.)The walk to that point is about 30 minutes and traverses an open field, passes a large pond and then gradually goes uphill along the stream as the ravine sides grow steeper. The group will retrace its steps back to the parking lot.
The Roger Perry Preserve of the Nature Conservancy is a short drive east from the center of Dover Plains. The calcareous ridge of rocks also has large amounts of white sand. This limestone underlay supports unusual and different species than are most common in Sherman/New Fairfield.
These two areas are intriguing for children as well as adults; short and with variety. Contact Naromi by email ( [email protected]) or phone (860-354-0260) so we know to expect you, or to request further information about these hikes. We will return to the Sherman Library no later than noon.
As always, wear sturdy shoes and bring water and a snack. If the the weather for that day is questionable or for more information please check the Naromi website www.naromi.org late Friday evening for any change in plans. Don't forget to like us on Facebook!

NFSAW Dog Walk
|
The New Fairfield/Sherman Animal Welfare Society held its first annual Dog Walk and Pet Fair on August 18th. Naromi Board members manned a information table and directed dogs and walkers to the Mallory Trail. Naromi sponsored several dogs, identified by a green scarf, as modeled by Peg and Maggie. Sherman Wildlife |
Check out this spider seen in northern Sherman-It is a female black & yellow Argiope Garden Spider. It is about an inch long and is common in this area. These spiders build a large distinctive web reaching 2 feet in diameter with a zigzag, called a stabilmentium, in the center. Click on the photo for more info. Photo by Marge Josephson.
The butterfly below is a Giant Swallowtail whose wingspan can reach up to 6 inches. Once rare in this area as they favor citrus orchards, they have been spotted more and more frequently in more northern climes. This photo was taken in Dover, NY, but these Butterlies have been spotted in both Fairfield and Litchfield counties. Click on the photo for more info. Photo by Dennis Larkin.
