Support Naromi!

Dear Friend of Naromi,
Naromi's fiscal year ends in just a few weeks, but there is still time to become a member or make a contribution.  You can make a contribution through our website. One of the things we at Naromi look forward to most at the end of our fiscal year is the Annual Meeting.  This is a great (free!) family event that is a mainstay of summers in Sherman. This year the Annual Meeting is on Friday July 13th.  We hope you will join us to get up close and personal with out feathered guests.  Check out the announcement below for more info.

Naromi now has a Facebook page!  Please "like" us to join the conversation and get updates on all Naromi happenings.

And finally, Naromi's shredder no longer works.  We would be glad to provide a home for a no-longer-needed shredder.  Let us know if you have one lying around you'd like to donate.

Thank you to each member of the Naromi community for your support during the past year!

Events Wrap-up: HIkes and Work Day
Brookland Work Day A team of volunteers came out on May 19th to help clear trails and cut back invasive plants at Naromi's oldest Preserve, Brookland. Thank you to everyone who came out!

Trails Day
Naromi planned two hikes to celebrate CT Trails Day (organized by CFPA) on the first weekend in June. The June 2nd  hike on the AT was a wash-out due to heavy rains, but the June 3rd hike at the Brookland Preserve was a go, albeit under threat of an imminent storm.  The sky darkened and the wind picked up as the hike went on.  The raindrops held off until the final moments of the hike.

AT Boardwalk Hike On June 9th a large group of folks from Sherman, New Fairfield and Wingdale/Dover gathered in Pawling to walk the newly finished Appalachian Trail Boardwalk. The group looked at a large map of the Great Swamp once everyone was gathered at the train platform, and also observed the turtle crossings of the tracks (an ongoing project to help turtles cross the railroad tracks, instead of getting trapped in between).  The group then looked at the beaver lodge and ever-expanding beaver-created pond next to the boardwalk (it is now almost a foot higher on three sides than the surrounding swamp).  The whole group walked across the boardwalk to the bridge, and a dozen continued up the hill on the AT trail for varying distances to add a more strenuous hike component to the outing.

The AT is now fully accessible from the parking lot, across the Metro North tracks and onto the boardwalk and as far as the beginning of the bridge at the far end; there is a large wheelchair turn around spot there.  The train made a stop at the platform as we were walking back.

The grand opening of the boardwalk will be held on Sunday, July 1.  Click here for more info.

Anyone who has questions about the location or accessibility of that section of the AT can contact Naromi Board members or the office.

Annual Meeting: Bird is the Word
Bird is the word at Naromi's Annual Meeting on July 13 at the Lake Mauweehoo Clubhouse. We will welcome Lauren Coyle, of the Livingston Ripley Waterfowl Conservancy and her Avian Ambassadors, in this case ducks. These Ambassadors are living and breathing examples of biodiversity. We will learn how the different species have adapted to a variety of habitats and diets.  At the end of the program, participants will have a chance to get even closer to the ducks and even touch them.  There will also be a brief business meeting and a report of Naromi's work over the past year.

Join us at 5:30 for twilight on the lake and light refreshments.  Program starts at 6.  More info on www.naromi.org or on Facebook.

Paddle on the Great Swamp on June 30th

Family Canoe Great SwampCome explore this treasure and learn about some of the wildlife that calls this area home, or is just stopping by on its way somewhere else. Board member Chris Jellen  will lead this 2 to 3 hour paddle from Patterson center to the Route 22-Haviland Hollow crossing.  Great Blue Outfitters will coordinate canoe and kayak rentals, including paddles, personal floatation device (pfd) and any other necessary supplies for anyone who wants to come but does not have their own equipment.  They are generously offering a discount on their regular prices for this trip. Prices are as follows: $30 for a solo kayak, or $20 per person for a canoe or a tandem (two-person) kayak.

We will meet at Great Blue Outfitters (3198 Route 22, Patterson, NY) at 8 am on June 30th. Anyone who wishes to rent a boat may do so then.  GBO will provide transportation for people and boat (all Boats, rented or not) to the put-in in Patterson Center.  We hope to be in the water by 9am to see as much wildlife as possible.  The trip will take 2 to 3 hours, depending on the wildlife activity, to reach the take-out point.  GBO will meet us there and transport everyone back to parking.

Advance registration is required for this trip whether you are bringing your own boat or renting one.  Register early if you are renting a boat, as this trip will sell out quickly. There is only one tandem kayak and two canoes left!

Please register by noon on Friday June 29th.

If you wish to rent a boat: Please call GBO to make your reservation 845-319-6172.

If you plan to bring your own boat: Please call the NLT office 860-354-0260 or email naromi@sbcglobal.net.

Wear comfortable clothes and don't bring anything that cannot get wet!
