| Dear Friend of Naromi, | |
Happy first official day of Spring! Get out and enjoy these warm temperatures on Naromi Preserves! Join us this Thursday to improve the trail at Herrick, or take time for a walk in Towner Hill, Irene's Woods, Herrick, or any other wetland area to hear the spring chorus of frogs.
Be sure to take precautions to protect yourself against ticks, which are plentiful outdoors these days. A surge in Lyme disease is predicted for this year. Read this article for more information.
With spring comes annual reminders from Naromi to do what you can to stop the spread of invasive plants. We will send our annual Primer next month, but notice that the barberry is just beginning to leaf out now. One can see just how rampant this particular plant is as it is green before anything else in the woods.
There are many great Naromi events coming up including workdays this week, a hike April 15th, and Earth Day events on April 21st, so please check our website often!

Frog Frolics at Towner Hill
|
The two Frog Frolics were just in time to hear the wood frogs chirping and quacking the arrival of Spring.
On Sunday March 11th, sixteen folks came out on a warm, but windy afternoon. By Saturday, no one in the NLT community had heard any wood frogs, but the combination of warm temperatures and the sunshine resulted in the frogs beginning to sing their song. They were still fairly skittish about people clambering up to the edge of the vernal pools. One budding naturalist figured out an effective method, sneak up slowly, then be still while the frogs get comfortable and resume their song. Here's a video of him.
On Sunday March 18th, twenty-one people came out on a spectacular almost-Spring afternoon and were witness to a robust chorus of quacking from wood frogs and chirping peepers. Here's a video from this day's concert.

| Trail Re-routing This Thursday 3/22 9:30 am |
The connector trail between the Herrick Trail and the Appalachian Trail needs to be re-routed. A volunteer crew from the Appalachian Mountain Club will help several NLT board members and staff at a workday this Thursday morning. The Herrick Trail is one of Naromi's most beloved areas and one the we hike often. If you enjoy this area, come pitch in! If we get a large enough crew, we may be able to start work on other improvements to the trail that we planned for workdays later in the year! Meet at the Evans Hill Rd trailhead at 9:30 with gloves, water, and a snack. Naromi will provide some tools, but bring a rake and loppers if you have them. Call 860-354-0260 or email us naromi@sbcglobal.net if you plan to come.

| Roadside Cleanup March 24th |
The Sherman Roadside Clean-up will be held on March 24th. Naromi holds several stretches of roadsides that could use your help! A stretch of Wagon Wheel Road needs the most help, as it seems to have served as a dumping ground at some point. There are all kinds of items, from small trash to larger construction debris. Naromi also hols stretches along Route 37E near the Towner Hill and Upland Pastures Preserves and Route 37 S between Chimney Hill and Briggs Hill Roads that need attention. Garbage from Route 37 should be left roadside for D.O.T. to pick up on March 26th. Gloves, bags and safety vests are available at Town Hall from March 15-23, and available in the parking lot on March 24th. If you plan to come help, call Ruth Byrnes at Town Hall, 860-355-1139 with questions or to sign up for a street. Call Naromi 860-354-0260, or email naromi@sbcglobal.net, with questions about Naromi properties. Join the effort to keep Sherman beautiful and litter free!

| Hike on April 15th: Cranberry Mountain |
Join NLT to hike the Cranberry Mountain Wildlife Management Area on April 15th at 1:30 pm. This preserve is just over the Sherman border in New York State, the area is 464 acres with an additional 261 acres newly preserved. It is directly across Stagecoach Road from the 700+ acre Michael Ciaiola Conservation Area (a Putnam County Park). The hike will be easy/moderate through rolling forest and open meadow. The hike will also pass this rock formation, with water flowing through. More information and directions will be available close to the date of the hike.
