Dear Friend of Naromi,

Naromi would like to congratulate the Town of Sherman and Tony Hapanowich on the preservation of Happy Acres Farm.  Mr. Hapanowich maintains life-use of the farm and the town now owns the property.

Naromi is starting to catch spring fever!  We will hold the now annual Frog Frolic on Towner Hill in late March, to see egg masses and hear the chorus of peepers and wood frogs harkening spring.  Naromi has begun planning activities in Sherman to celebrate Earth Day -- look for some details below.  We have included notice of a couple Earth Day events by other organizations so you can mark your calendars early.

We have also included photos of the most recent winter fun at Hadlow Preserve and of common birds in Sherman during the winter months, like the magnificent male Cardinal above.

Expedition at Hadlow Fields

Group: Hadlow 2/6/11Stephanie Warren & Tom Keane

On February 6, a group of six snowshoers and one skier trekked to the top of Hadlow Preserve. It was another glorious day.  Tom Keane lead the group of folks from Sherman and New Fairfield. There were people of various abilities, first-timers who couldn't resist the unparalleled snow conditions to old-hands.

We hope you had a chance to get out there and enjoy the snow on your favorite Naromi preserve this winter!

Mark your Calendar for April Events!

Winter Birds

Here are photos taken in Sherman this winter by Dennis LarkinWinter is a great time to do birdwatching.   All you need is a window and some bird seed and suet blocks within sight.   The snows we have had since Christmas have made a good background to see both the bright and subtle colors.  The photos here were all taken from a kitchen window -- except for the cedar waxwing in a cedar (!) tree.  Winter birds are hungry and less likely to challenge each other, so you may get large groups.  Bluejays, sparrows, juncos may come in flocks of ten or twenty or more.  Even the wild turkeys may discover the seed under the feeders and give you a close up view.  And remember to look for the red spots in trees -- probably a male cardinal watching you.   When you go out in the woods and fields  keep your ears tuned to the soft calls of many other birds; you may hear the flocks of robins, the cedar waxwings, the bluebirds.   Look up in the sky to see our local soaring hawks, vultures, and the occasional bald eagle. Thank you Dennis for sharing your photos!  Click on the images for more information about each species.
