A Note from the NLT President

Season's Greetings,

All of us at Naromi Land Trust thank you for support and involvement during 2010.  We wish everyone the very best for 2011.

Just last week Congress renewed the enhanced tax incentive has been an important contributor to land preservation since its inception several years ago.  (More on this below.)

Locally, in 2011 Naromi will start work on a handicapped accessible boardwalk at the Wimisink Preserve and develop plans to expand our trail network.   We can use your help along the way!

Our eNews mailing list is now over 400 strong.  If you have photos, vignettes, conservation or ecology news please let us know; we want your feedback!

Sincerely,

Marge Signature

Marge Josephson, President

P.S.  And, our end-of-the-year membership campaign is still open! Thank you to all who have renewed or become new members!!

The US Congress has renewed a federal tax incentive for conservation easements.  The incentive raises the deduction a donor can take for donating a voluntary conservation agreement from 30% of their income in any year to 50%, allows farmers and ranchers to deduct up to 100% of their income; and increases the number of years over which a donor can take deductions from 6 to 16 years.  More information is available on the Land Trust Alliance website.

New Website
We have been working to improve our website over the past few months.  Please do take a look around the new site and tell us what you think!  Is there something that you think is missing?  What other information would you like us to include?  We would love to hear from you!

New England Cottontail Initiative

New England cottontail
The CT DEP has joined the New England Cottontail Project team to develop and implement  a regional initiative to restore 1,200 acres of New England Cottontail habitat in Connecticut, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York, and Maine. The New England cottontail is the only cottontail rabbit native to Connecticut. Here is fact sheet published by the DEP. It is very similar to another species, the eastern cottontail.  The physical differences (body size, shape of ears, markings) between the two are so subtle that DNA testing is required to confirm identification. The rabbits do prefer different habitats. The eastern cottontail like lawns, golf courses, and active agricultural lands, while the New England cottontail prefers early successional habitat like fallow farmland, old fields, regenerating forests and dense thickets of shrubs.

Eastern cottontail
Eastern cottontail
The New England cottontail is considered a species of greatest conservation need and a petition to list it as threatened or endangered and to designate critical habitat under the federal Endangered Species Act was filed in 2008.

The CT DEP Wildlife Division's target goal is to restore 150 acres of New England cottontail habitat on state-owned properties to serve as demonstration areas and core locations from which New England cottontails onto surrounding privately-owned parcels.  Funding will be available to other landowners such as Naromi, to become active partners in this project and manage their own property with the New England cottontail in mind.

Call for Volunteers
Dining tablesNaromi needs volunteers to help us organize our events in 2011.  We have plans and ideas but we need both worker bees and someone with vision and leadership to realize Naromi's goals.  Do you have fun organizing gatherings and activities for your friends and family?  Would you like to translate that talent to a larger scale to benefit Naromi?  Naromi's events range from volunteer workdays and hikes to large scale galas for 300+ people.  We need your help on the small, large and in between.  Call or email the office today!

Cross-country Skiing at Hadlow Fields

during warmer months
Please keep a lookout for emails regarding a cross-country skiing this winter in the Hadlow Fields.  When the conditions are right, Naromi will lead an outing for cross-country skiers and/or snowshoers.  Warming beverages and treats to follow in the neighborhood.
Notice will likely be short because of variable conditions, so let us know if you would like to be on a list of interested persons.  We will send out an extra notice to those folks.  Let it snow!

Please share this Naromi newsletter with your friends by using the forward button below.  We welcome comments from you about what you would like to see discussed here and what you think we are doing right, or wrong!  We look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,
