Dear Friend of Naromi,
| The summer season is here; time to enjoy all aspects of the outdoors. Naromi looks forward to seeing you at its upcoming events: hikes on June 5th, June 19th and July 10th, and of course, its Annual July meeting. Children of all ages will enjoy hearing James Eyring and seeing his live hawks and owls (see below for more details).
New trails in the Mallory Preserve and the Towner Hill Preserve were laid out by Hunter Brawley and are being developed by Chris Jellen. (Join Naromi to walk the new Mallory Trail on June 19th.) If you have a few hours to help Chris, you will become part "owner" in our expanding trail system. Call the office if you would like to work on the new trails.
Wildlife of all types abounds in Sherman. Some 2010 photos by Naromi volunteer Dennis Larkin are included in this newsletter. How many can you identify? How many have you seen yourself? Please send us more photos for future issues of Naromi News.

CT Trails Day
| Naromi Land
Trust and New Fairfield Land Trust will lead a joint hike on Saturday June
5th as a part of the statewide celebration of Trails Day.
The
Herrick Trail is located in the north end of Sherman and has a
connector to the Appalachian Trail. The first half of the trail
follows an old pathway through a varied forest and is an easy to
moderate one mile to an impressive high overlook with views up the
Housatonic River Valley. Another viewpoint will be an optional
digression along the way. If you only have a short time you
can retrace your way back to the starting point. For those who
enjoy a hike with variety we will continue on and turn on to the
Appalachian Trail as it goes down to the Ten Mile River. We will then cross
the Ten Mile River at its confluence with the Housatonic River at the Ned
Anderson Bridge and end at the covered bridge at Bulls Bridge (intersection
with Route 7). Total distance will be approximately 4 miles, one
way. We will arrange carpooling/shuttles to get you back to your car in
Sherman.
CT Trails Day 2010 is a nationwide celebration, coordinated statewide since 1993 by the
Connecticut Forest & Park Association (CFPA). The goal is to increase
awareness of public hiking trails and the many joys and benefits they provide.
This year there are over 130 events statewide. Strong participation by
organizations like the Appalachian Mountain Club, the Connecticut DEP, local
and regional land trusts, town agencies, outdoor-minded businesses, CFPA
volunteers, and great sponsors are key to the success of Connecticut Trails
Day.
For more information or to register to join the hike on the Herrick Trail, please call or email the
Naromi office (860-354-0260 or info@naromi.org
). Meet at 9 AM at the trailhead on Evans Hill Road, 1/10 mile from the
western end of Evans Hill Road intersection with Route 55. Be sure to
wear sturdy shoes; bring a beverage and a snack or sandwich; wear sunscreen.
All ages are welcome! Rain Date Sunday, June 6.

He will bring Birds of Prey and Owls (probably Gyrfalcon, Peregrine falcon, Harris hawk, and several owls). Assuming a clear evening he will be able to fly the birds before dusk. We will post additional information here as the date approaches.
