Peace and Goodwill...

For a long time I have been asked and I have tried to express what makes our
St. John's community so special. And frankly, an exact answer has remained elusive. Certainly, I feel it every day in what we do... I see it in our children, our parents and our faculty... but what is IT, exactly?

After much consideration, I think it all boils down to one word: goodwill, that simple desire to give unselfishly for the betterment of others. It's a blessed concept, and at St. John's it takes many forms.

Let's start with the goodwill of our children.

Right now, our kids are touching the lives of the less fortunate in our community by participating in these holiday service projects:

  • Pre-k, kindergarten, first grade: Teddy bear donations to the Northeast Police Substation
  • Second grade: Toys for White Rock Center of Hope
  • Third grade: Disaster kits for the Emergency Response and Recovery department of the American Red Cross
  • Fourth grade: Books for and a visit to Reinhardt Elementary School
  • Fifth grade: Coats for and a visit to children at Mi Escuelita Preschool
  • Sixth grade: Items for two families adopted through White Rock Center of Hope
  • Seventh grade: Toys for donation to Toys for Tots
  • Eighth grade: Toys for donation to Toys for Tots
  • National Junior Honor Society: Sponsorship of a child through World Vision; donation to the Muscular Dystrophy Association

Crusader Club Cares

volunteers at Mi EscuelitaThe Crusader Club is gearing up for its third annual parent/child community service day. On the morning of Saturday, January 28, parents and St. John's students will have an opportunity to complete age-appropriate service projects for a variety of local organizations like CitySquare, Dallas Life Foundation, Juliette Fowler Homes, Mi Escuelita Preschool and Reinhardt Elementary.

We encourage students -- pre-k through eighth grade -- to participate along with a parent. On the morning of the event, we will gather at school at 9:00 a.m. for coffee and breakfast snacks. By 9:30, we will leave campus to carpool/caravan to the individual projects, which will last for a couple hours. Each project will be led by a Crusader Club member, and after completion the leader will conduct a short debriefing about the experience at the site. Each agency will provide a tour, discussion about their mission and reflection opportunity.

Leading up to the event, we will collect various items that will benefit these agencies, such as toiletry items, used books, canned goods and clothing. The items will be donated that morning.

The Crusader Club is currently recruiting dads who would like to serve as project leaders for the projects. Leaders will help coordinate with the agency and St. John's staff, help plan the projects and recruit volunteers. If you are interested, please contact Jennifer Hand.
