Welcome to the first edition of PARENTS' NEWS, featuring all the latest information from the Crusader Club and Parents Association. On the second Wednesday of each month, you'll receive a copy of this newsletter with information about upcoming parent-sponsored events, volunteer opportunities and much more. Archived copies will be available on the Parents page of the St. John's website.

Uniform Resale
When: Saturday, August 20, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Where: Owen Gym (in the Lower School)
Stock up on gently used uniform pieces and spirit items on tax-free weekend! For your convenience, there will be a tailor on-site to take any items you'd like to have altered. Cash, check and credit cards will be accepted. Proceeds from Uniform Resale benefit the Dorothy Patterson Scholarship Fund.

 
New Parent 101 Coffee
When: Friday, August 26, from 8:15 to 9:30 a.m.
Where: Parish Hall

What's a birthday blessing? How does my kindergartener join a soccer team? What happens if our grandparents can't come on Grandparents Day? Get answers to these and other important questions from veteran St. John's parents at the 101 Coffee hosted for new parents.

 

 

PA Meeting

When: Wednesday, September 7, at 8:30 a.m.

Where: Parish Hall

Join the Parents Association Council for its first meeting of the school year. Subsequent PA meetings will be on the first Tuesday of the month. All are welcome to attend.

 

 

Speaker Series

When: Thursday, September 8, at 12:00 p.m.

Where: Parish Hall

PA Speaker Series events are open to ALL who'd like to attend. Beverages and light snacks are provided, and "brown bagging it" is encouraged.

 

We welcome Dr. Kristen Ohlenforst to the first Speaker Series event of the school year. Dr. Ohlenforst is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in individual- and family-based treatment for children and adolescents. You may remember her as the facilitator at the St. John's screening of Race to Nowhere. Read Dr. Ohlenforst's bio>> and stay tuned for more info about this event.

 

 

Crusader Club Breakfast

When: Friday, September 16, from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.

Where: Parish Hall

ALL dads are invited to the first Crusader Club breakfast of the year. Mark Crotty will speak to the group. Learn more about the Crusader Club below.

 

 

Head for the Day

When: Wednesday, September 28

Eighth grader Gatlin Shore will be our Head for the Day this year with a theme of Wilderness - the Great Outdoors. Add it to your calendar and look for details about the annual PA event in September.

Earn cash for St. John's by clipping Box Tops coupons on participating products>> The Lower and Middle School grades that collect the most Box Tops will win a free-dress day. Monthly prizes will also be distributed to the grades that collect the most coupons.

 

 

Tom Thumb, Albertsons, Kroger and Target Cards

Stop by the customer service desk at Tom Thumb and register your Reward card to participate in the Good Neighbor program; the proceeds from your everyday purchases will go to our school. Our school program number is 1240.

 

Register your Target Red Card and 1% of all your purchases will be donated to our school. Contact Becka Dillon>> if you'd like an Albertson's key tag. Kroger shoppers may print the barcode>> for our school donations.

 

 

VolunteerWays to Get Involved

We'd love to have you join us! Check out these upcoming opportunities and email the contacts below if you're interested in participating. Look for the green Volunteer icon at left in future editions of PARENTS' NEWS to find volunteer opportunities.

 

Help set up Uniform Resale on Friday, August 19, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. and get first dibs on the merchandise. Or volunteer to work a shift at the sale Saturday, August 20 (shifts available between 8:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.). Contact Kara Name>> or Tana Parsons>> if you're interested.

 

Help set up, tear down or work the Book Fair the first week in October. Contact Jeannie Courtwright>> if you're interested.

 

There are still some lunchroom shifts available if you'd like to volunteer. Commit for a day or multiple days -- whatever works with your schedule. Contact Heather Stubbings>> if you're interested.

 

 

A Note of Gratitude

A BIG thank you to all who have worked so hard this summer to prepare for the new school year, especially our new PA and Crusader Club committee members -- you are the BEST!

The Carnival Team - Kari Hernandez, Kathy Carroll and Amy Laczkowski and their flawless coordination with Cata Cooper, Liz Williamson and the school. Plans are made, funds are being raised and all are having fun preparing for this favorite family event.

About the Parents Association 

 

The St. John's Parents Association is a group of dedicated parents that organizes volunteers and hosts several events during the year. The PA's goal is to strengthen our community and raise funds to expand the opportunities available to our students.

 

The PA hosts the annual Book Fair, Carnival and Auction; organizes school volunteers; promotes fellowship among families; and supports and recognizes faculty throughout the year.

Crusader ClubAbout the Crusader Club

 

The Crusader Club sponsors social and fundraising events for dads, helps with school functions, and provides a unique opportunity for school participation and financial support.

 

In addition to breakfast meetings held at the school, the Crusader Club hosts signature events, like the fathers-only Suds-n-Buds, the hugely popular Dads-n-Kids donut breakfast, Crusader Cares Day and the annual Crusader Club Classic Golf Tournament.

 

All fathers are encouraged to join and participate in the Crusader Club. To learn more, please attend the first breakfast meeting on Friday, September 16, or contact Jennifer Hand>>
