Greetings!

Welcome to the April edition of our Discover More
newsletter.
Why Metabolite Profiling?
There are still many people who have yet to try metabolite profiling (i.e., metabolomics/metabonomics) even though they have heard a lot about its powerful potential.

Metabolomics offers rapid identification and quantification of the unique small molecule metabolite profile that characterizes specific cellular processes in an organism. It has been used in a broad spectrum of applications including biomaker discovery, drug development/toxicity, nutrition, agriculture, fermentation, and many more.

The 2008 edition of Advances in Microbial Physiology (V53) lists reasons why metabolomics is the functional genomics technology of choice (p115): "First of all, the information that can be derived from the metabolome corresponds to a very different perspective on cellular functioning than those of the genome, transcriptome, and proteome. While genomic studies are highly instrumental in uncovering the genetic potential of the gut microbiome, and the transcriptome reflecting the functional response, the proteome and metabolome together determine the actual functionality of a cell. The biochemical level of the metabolome is the closest to that of the function of a cell, and thus the study of the metabolome is the most relevant in order to comprehend biological functioning." In the December 2009 issue of the Magnetic Resonance in Chemistry, there was a study published by Romich-Rosendale et al. entitled NMR-based metabonomics analysis of mouse urine and fecal extracts following oral treatment with the broad-spectrum antibiotic enrofloxacin (Baytril).

In this study, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy analysis was used to characterize the role of gut bacteria in human health and disease. The patented "Targeted Profiling" technology of Chenomx NMR Suite was used to monitor changes in metabolic profiles of urine and fecal extracts of 15 mice following gut sterilization by the broad-spectrum antibiotic enrofloxacin. They concluded that administration of a broad-spectrum antibiotic to mice made it possible to observe changes in the metabolic profiles of mice due to the loss of their gut flora revealing a network of related metabolic processes affected by loss of microbial metabolism. Therefore, obtaining metabolic profiles that can be attributed to specific bacterial species in host biological fluids and analyzing the changes that occur may lead to a better understanding of how certain inflammatory bowl diseases are initiated.

Upcoming Metabolomics Conference
Registration for the 2010 Metabolomics Society conference is now open. Chenomx is sponsoring and attending this conference taking place June 27th to July 1st, 2010, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

This is the first joint meeting linking the activities of a number of different organizations. The program will cover all the main scientific areas where metabolomics is already playing a key role including plants, humans, microbes, ecosystems, biomarkers, nutrition and more.

You can register for this conference and get more information by clicking here. Remember to drop by to see us! We look forward to meeting you there.
