Message from the Headmaster
Mother-Daughter Evening was a great success. It was great fun to see the many matching dressed mothers with their daughters. The choir performed well, our speaker Mrs. Chana Rothenstein was inspiring, and the deserts were scrumptious. The fundraiser was very successful raising more than $2,000 for Bikur Cholim. Many thanks to our Chessed Committee members, Stephanie Bergman, Elianna Kleinberg, Hannah Samuels, and Aleeza Shumacher for putting on a hugely successful event. Without even taking a breather, the Chesed Committee has organized for this Friday our annual Ulpanat Orot Erev Pessach Nursing Home visit to a series of nursing homes throughout the GTA. Kol HaKavod!
The Chesed Committee of Or Chaim is sponsoring this Friday a Chulent Fest. Teams compete by entering a chulent they prepare at school this evening. Tasters pay a fee and Friday is the contest. All proceeds will go to Od Yosef Chai an organization that supports needy Israeli families.
Our senior Varsity Basketball Team returned from the Yeshiva University Red Sarachek Basketball Tournament with a 2nd Place trophy in tier 3 competition. They all had a great time meeting Grade 12s from around North America who they will be together with while learning in Israel next year. They also had the opportunity to see how exciting a place Yeshiva University is and we hope this will help many of our students think even more seriously about Yeshiva University as a University option. Our students were very well behaved and were distinguished for their Derech Eretz.
Rivkah Sabovich qualified last year at the National Chidon HaTanach Competition to compete at this year's International Chidon HaTanach Competition taking place in Jerusalem. Rivkah will be in Israel over Yom Haatzmaut when the finals take place. We are exceedingly proud of her accomplishments and wish her Hatzlacha Rabba in her efforts. We thank Mrs. Gemara for her expert guidance in preparing Rivkah and all the other Chidon participants for their competitions.
Rav Yaakov Medan, Rosh HaYeshiva of Yeshivat Har Etzion (Gush) spoke to our boys after tefila on Monday. Rav Medan gave an amazing shiur in Hebrew to Grades 10-12 on "The 10 Plagues." Our boys were privileged to see the insight of a leading expositor of Tanach in our generation.
The annual Car Wash takes place this Sunday and we encourage our parents to patronize this event. There are two locations - one north and one south for convenience sake. See details below. Regular classes will take place at Yeshivat Or Chaim for Grade 10 this Sunday as chosen by their class. Grade 9s will have their first 2 periods of class and have agreed to participate in the car wash the rest of the morning. Grade 9s, 10s and 11s may volunteer at the carwash after 12:30 pm.
Allow me to wish at this time all our families and students a wonderful Pesach. May the chag be one that deepens our understanding and appreciation that we are all part of a community liberated from Egypt both physically and spiritually to find our true purpose in life as servants of HaShem.
Chag Kasher v'Sameach,
Rabbi Scot A. Berman

This Week at
Bnei Akiva Schools
Grade 11 & 12 students at Or Chaim listened to an inspiring lecture by Rav Yaakov Medan, Rosh Yeshivat Har Etzion and one of the Talmedai Chachamim of our generation on Monday morning.
In conjunction with their "Careers" course, Grade 10 students participate in The Young Philanthropists Initiative (Y.P.I.) an academic philanthropy program founded by the Toskan Casale Foundation. Mira Rosenberg, Talia Schwartz and Yakira Begun visited the Canadian Helen Keller Association, their chosen charity, as part of their preliminary research for their project. Look out for more coverage about various YPI site visits in future newsletters. |
Mother-Daughter Night at Ulpana

The Chessed Committee & Their Mothers: From L-R; Romy and Hannah Samuels, Aleeza and Marcia Shumacher and Simmi and Elianna Kleinberg (all photos courtesy of Rebecca Ansell)
On Tuesday, March 27th, the Ulpanat Orot Chessed Committee hosted their annual Mother-Daughter dessert reception. A special Yashar Koach to the committee members as mentioned above - Hannah Samuels, Aleeza Shumacher, Elianna Kleinberg and Stephanie Bergman (not featured in the photo). Thank you as well goes to Mrs. Shari Weinberg for her guidance.

All proceeds from the evening were donated to Bikur Cholim of Toronto. Mrs. Chana Rothenstein (right) spoke about Bikur Cholim's services; providing resources to people in very diverse situations; including homebound elderly who need to be taken to appointments, overburdened mothers who need home-care assistance and patients in convalescent facilities who need kosher food and also maintain a strong presence in hospitals where there are large Jewish populations. She reflected on her own experiences as a volunteer and some of the services her family members recieved.
Students and their mothers worked together on an art project, creating electric Shabbos candle packages for people in the hospital that will be donated to Bikur Cholim.

Among the highlights of the evening was the Ulpana Choir's performance. Under the direction of Amanda Lax, Orah Rosenberg and Adi Sheinberg, the choir sang beautiful renditions of "Lu Yehei and "Ahavat Yisrael." A great time was had by all complete with great desserts, singing, dancing and great company.
For Aleeza Shumacher, the best part of planning the evening was "Working with my co-chessed committee chairs. We had so much fun planning and we work really well together." Elianna Kleinberg explained that the Chessed Committee chose to raise funds for Bikur Cholim because it is a cause close to home. "Many Ulpana students call a senior (through Bikur Cholim) before Shabbos to wish them a 'shabbat shalom.' Additionally, students' family members have used the services," Kleinberg explained.

Grade 11 Ulpana student Leora Mayer (middle) enjoyed a night out with some ladies in her family including her grandmother Eva Mayer (bottom left), her younger sister Arielle (bottom right), her aunt Rena Neufeld (top left) and her mother Alina (top right). |

Physics Competition Recap
We are extremely proud of our Grade 11 Physics Teams who represented Canada at the International Shalheveth Freier Physics Tournament for high school students at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rechovot last week placing 7th out of 39 teams from across the world.

Or Chaim students from L-R Shragee Berger, Michael Ihilchik, Ariel Kelman and Adin Pellow recieve their team award at the closing ceremonies.
(All photos courtesy of Mrs. Chocron)

Shragee explains the physics concepts behind the safe constructed by his team.

Physics teacher Mrs. Chocron (center), poses with the Or Chaim team outside of the auditorium where the closing ceremony was held.
Student Reflections:
"The time I spent in Israel was one of the greatest times I have ever had. It could have been the competition itself, spending time with friends, or seeing distant family, I don't know, but I enjoyed it all the same. Hopefully, we will be given this opportunity again next year so we can improve on our mistakes and do even better." - Michael Ihilchik
"The experience opened my eyes to different ways to implement theoretical physics concepts to make a tangible safe. This exposure gave me ideas for next year." - Shragee Berger
"It was great to meet people from all over the world who are interested in the same things as us."
- Ariel Kelman |
