| Greetings! |
During the past several months, I have spent a significant amount of time working with Management Teams and Board of Directors on strategic planning. I have participated in many discussions concerning image and the communication of their company's story. For many companies, these subjects are difficult, time consuming and for some, it seems like bragging. Many times these challenges are the reasons why a company's story never gets told accurately. Do your patrons and stockholders know how much the economic impact of your business affects your community? You need to tell the factual story about your company because if you don't, no one else will. Some of your patrons or stockholders may think they know the story, but you need to clearly communicate the facts. If you are not focused on your company's image or are not communicating your company's story, get started. It is not too late. Thank you for your continued support and business.

| HIRING EMPLOYEES UNDER 18 |
As we finally begin to thaw out from this winter's unusual storms we start to contemplate the coming harvest, which means it is time again to gear-up and think about hiring harvest help. It is also time for your yearly reminder about the Department of Labors' requirements for hiring young employees.
The fines for violating the Child Labor Laws are substantial as a local grocery store in western Kansas found out the hard way last year. They were fined several hundred thousand dollars for violating child labor laws. Don't let your Co-op suffer this un-necessary financial penalty by hiring young employees during harvest.
Generally speaking, we should not hire anyone below 18 years of age to perform any duties around our companies. If you absolutely can't avoid hiring someone below 18, keep the following rules in mind.
Employees 16-17 years of age may not be employed in hazardous occupations such as operating or working around:
Truck Hoists Gin Machinery
Man Lifts Power Driven equipment
Grain Augers Tire Repair equipment
Operating fork trucks Driving as a delivery/errand person
Strictly speaking, the only things a person under 18 can do around our establishments is office help and scale duties.
If the person under 18 is running the scale and taking samples, THEY CANNOT CLIMB UP ON THE TRUCKS AND TAKE SAMPLES. They may run a remotely operated grain probe, but you must keep them off the trucks!!
Once again I urge you to adopt the policy that you will not hire anyone under 18 years of age. It just isn't worth the possible consequences of fines or worse yet getting one of these young people injured. It doesn't matter that they are related to you, they still can't legally do any of the work mentioned above.
