April 2012

Greetings!

Stressed LadyHow stressed are you? Find out this month by taking our research-based stress and anxiety quiz

Then discover how to reduce the toll stress takes on your life through our new video clips and essay by best-selling author and researcher Robert M. Sapolsky.

With a winning combination of humor and science, Sapolsky explains how chronic stress can kill you--and what you can do to manage it. He also discusses when stress is actually good for you.

Anyone can enjoy clips from Sapolsky's talk on stress, but only Greater Good members can watch the complete, unabridged video--a great reason to become a member now!

This month on Greater Good, you'll also discover:

And much more--read on below!

Notes on Being Human
BeingHumanThe unprecedented Being Human conference in San Francisco last week explored the science of human consciousness and connection. Jason Marsh reports on some highlights from the event.

For more insight into what it means to be human, read Marsh's interviews with two of the day's speakers: Laurie Santos, who discusses what we learn about altruism by getting inside monkeys' minds, and neuroscientist V.S. Ramachandran, who explains what mirror neurons reveal about empathy and other skills.

Trayvon Martin and Racial Bias

Was Trayvon Martin shot and killed because he was African-American?

As the facts emerge, this classic Greater Good article on racial bias in policing can help us make sense of the case. You can learn more in the Greater Good anthology, Are We Born Racist? New Insights from Neuroscience and Positive Psychology.
