January 2012

Greetings!

A controversial essay in The New York Times argued recently that solitude and privacy are better for creativity.

But research on "group flow" suggests oth
erwise. As Keith Sawyer argues in his new Greater Good article, great creativity almost always springs from collaboration, conversation, and social networks.

So how can we help teams get into "flow," where they're totally absorbed in their work? Read Sawyer's article to learn the 10 keys to creative and effective groups.

Also this month on Greater Good, you'll find:
  • Marriage advice for Newt Gingrich;
  • What the Italian cruise ship disaster reveals about heroism;
  • How a new program is reducing teacher burnout;
  • Evidence that rats feel empathy (and what that means for humans);
  • Christine Carter's tips for giving kids a healthy body image, without dieting.

And much more--read on below!

How Childcare Can Enrich Your Life
Many families wonder whether childcare is good for kids. But research suggests that it can be very good for moms.

In "How Childcare Boosts Social Capital," Meera Sethi explores how moms reap social, psychological, and even financial rewards from their connections to childcare centers.

  • A segment on Fox News debating a study by GGSC fellow Jennifer Stellar, which found that wealthier people show less compassion and empathy.
  • A public radio interview with GGSC fellow Eve Ekman about empathy fatigue.
