You've Gotta Read It to Believe It
| |
"Today we may be living in the most peaceable era in our species' existence."
Say what? Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker makes this claim at the start of his new book, The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined, challenging some of our deepest assumptions about human nature and human history.
Pinker's book is "required reading for any reader of Greater Good," writes Editor-in-Chief Jason Marsh in his Greater Good review.
Read Marsh's review--and check out Pinker's Greater Good essay on peace and violence for a taste of his book. |
Is Empathy Overrated?
| |
In a recent New York Times column, David Brooks (left) argues that empathy is a "sideshow" to morality--it doesn't actually make people help others. Is Brooks right about "the limits of empathy"?
Find out what Greater Good's Jason Marsh has to say--then weigh in with a comment of your own.

Meet Our Fellows: Michaela Simpson
|
|
This month, meet Hornaday Graduate Fellow Michaela Simpson, who is pursuing her Ph.D. in the clinical science program of UC Berkeley's psychology department.
Michaela is studying the biological bases of kind, helpful--or "pro-social"--behavior, looking specifically at the biological response to distress as a way to understand pro-social behavior. Learn more about the rest of our fellows here, and if you'd like to support a trailblazing researcher like Michaela, contact us. |
