Bosco & Myerson Bring the Spirit of the American Renaissance to the Ikeda Center



On September 24, Ronald A. Bosco (right) and Joel Myerson (left) appeared at the Center to talk about their new book, co-authored with Center founder Daisaku Ikeda, Creating Waldens: An East-West Conversation on the American Renaissance. Their comments ranged from reflections on their dialogue with Mr. Ikeda to insights into the meaning of Emerson and Thoreau for our times. Professor Anita Patterson of Boston University shared some opening comments on the book.

Knitter and Cox Publish Important New Books

Two good friends of the Ikeda Center, Harvey Cox and Paul Knitter, recently published books that have received positive attention in the mainstream media. In The Future of Faith, Cox argues that we have entered an era in which increasing numbers of religious practitioners care more about ethics and spirituality than in the dogmas that divide us. Knitter's book, Without Buddha I Could Not Be a Christian, echoes Cox's theme of practice over dogma and reveals how Knitter's exploration of Buddhism worked to enrich his own Christian faith. An early advisor to the Center, Professor Cox recently participated in the 2008 Ikeda Center event called "Understanding Death, Appreciating Life." Co-editor of the Center's book Subverting Greed, Professor Knitter was the subject of this 2008 Ikeda Center interview.
