Home Schooling
Whoever
said it was easy being [the parent of] a child actor? Between
auditions, jobs and school there are a lot of responsibilities to
juggle.
If
you are lucky enough to be booking work on a regular basis, you may
find your public school has become uncooperative due in part to your
child's lack of attendance. Your child's school may even ask you to
dis-enroll many states they have a legal right to do so. In
California this is known as the Pupil Attendance law.
When education is a priority and acting is your passion, homeschooling, independent study and virtual (online) schools are all viable options. Traditional homeschooling is the education of children at home, typically by parents or professional tutors, rather than in a public or private school. However, there are other options such as independent study where parents facilitate learning and
students are required to regularly report to teachers, and online
learning where students report daily to a virtual school. Whether you
choose one of these homeschooling options for personal reasons or are
forced to do so because it is impossible for your child to attend a
regular public school, you should first become aware of the laws
pertaining to homeschooling in your state. Next, research homeschooling options.
"While
public programs are free to the student and family," Terry Neven of Sunland Homeschool explained,
"Their curriculum and accountability process can limit acting
opportunities. Homeschooling can provide those in the industry with
the chance to nurture family relationships, help children maintain
family values and develop study skills."
Sunland Homeschool,
the California home school named in the state-wide fight for home
schooling rights, recently won a Court of Appeal's case confirming that
non-credentialed parents may teach their own children (August 8th,
2008, In Re: Jonathan L., Second Appellate District, Division Three). Terry Neven,
principal of Sunland, was personally involved in helping to encourage
the court to vacate their original ruling and rehear the case.
