Understanding the Casting Process
Wouldn't it be great to "get discovered"
while walking through the park because an industry professional happens to
notice your child and just can't wait to get them on screen? Although it
happened that way for Spencer Breslin,
this isn't the norm. For some of you, you may not live in an area where
your neighbor is a makeup artist and your boss' husband works at a
studio. And for those who do live in major entertainment cities, there is
a lot of competition to get roles.
So while "being discovered," in the
purest sense of the term, happens occasionally, most actors go through stages
before making it big. You and your child must pursue acting with a
passion. You must determine your commitment level, seek and sign
representation, go on auditions and finally, book jobs. It takes time and
an understanding for where your focus should be at each point in your
process. For example, if you do not already have an agent
or manager,
your focus should be on finding representation rather than finding auditions.
We feel that if you understand the casting
process well, that is, if you understand what agents, casting directors and
producers are going through in their daily jobs, you'll be better equipped to
help your child succeed.
KidStart is a great step-by-step
program designed to help you understand the process and launch your child's
career. We also invite you to read the article "Understanding the
