ANDREA AT JACOB'S PILLOW

Recently Andrea and Troy traveled to Becket, Massachusetts to teach at the green and glorious Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival. Together they spent one week working intimately with students in the School's Contemporary Program to create a work of improvised material. Both Troy and The School's Director of Education had fantastic things to say about the experience:

Andrea and I had a great time returning to the Pillow to teach for a week this summer. We swapped ideas with the stellar summer
faculty, took ballet class, and experimented with the students through controlled studies. Andrea used information gleaned from her summer teaching schedule to coach and sculpt a dance made entirely out of improvisation. Along with a whole lot of dancing, rehearsal time was allotted for the dancers to speak about their experience- an important skill in today's arts environment.

(Andrea) significantly advanced our dancers' improvisational skills with her thoughtful and innovative compositional style. Pillow audiences felt the spirit of group unity she fostered in the dancers as they made movement choices that stemmed from an awareness of one another in the space. Andrea created a great experience for everyone at the Pillow this summer!

CAROLINE AT BROADWAY DANCE CENTER

At the beginning of the month, company dancer
Caroline taught class at the Broadway Dance Center in a successful continuation of the long-standing relationship between BDC and Gallim Dance.
This was a really special opportunity to work with such talented dancers. They really took the opportunity to dive into the work headfirst. I was impressed with their willingness to try new (and sometimes scary!) things. While we accomplished much in one class, I look forward to seeing Gallim partner with BDC again--there is so much more to explore!

Andrea: Americans Elect 2012
Americans Elect 2012 is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that is initiating the first-ever open, online presidential nomination process. Their goal is to secure ballot access for a directly-nominated presidential candidate--one that does not come exclusively from the Republican or Democrat parties. The current U.S. electoral system of party primaries is rather restrictive in the way candidates are selected and presented; this new online process will give millions a greater voice in choosing their next Presidential candidate. Americans Elect 2012 indicates that they need 3,000,000 people backing up the initiative-- go online to AmericansElect.org to sign up and be heard!
Daniel: The Temple of the Golden Pavilion Last month I attended a performance of 'The Temple of the Golden Pavilion' as part of Lincoln Center Festival at the Rose Theater. The play is based off the 1956 novel by the great Japanese writer Yukio Mishima. I decided to go to the show at the last minute--not realizing that it was going to be three hours and entirely in Japanese. However, I was more than surprised at the beauty of this production. With the musicality of the language, the extremely thoughtful direction by Amon Miyamoto, and most of all the brilliant lighting, it ended up being one of the most enjoyable evenings I've had at the theater in a long time. I am now reading Mishima's novel and I can't put it down. I highly recommend any future productions by Miyamoto and all the writings of Mishima.
Emily: Goodreads Goodreads.com is the world's largest social networking site for book lovers: the site boasts over 5.4 million users and 170 million book titles. With a free profile you can review books, get recommendations from your friends, find new titles, and join discussions/book clubs. Rather than sifting through bestseller lists, I pick new books based on recommendations from my friends. The site is definitely my favorite way to keep track of a growing 'To Read' list, and I love being able to see what my friends are currently reading and enjoying!
