Sitka Chamber Board Passes Resolution In Support of the Cruise Industry
Recent discussions from the City and Borough of Sitka have been exploring the idea of putting a question on the ballot this October, asking Sitka voters if the City of Sitka should be allowed to build a down town cruise ship dock near Centennial Hall with the city either owning the dock or leasing it to another entity. The question does not, however, provide specifics on placement of the dock, where funding will come from, a conceptual design, a completion date, nor a feasibility study to determine if a downtown dock will even attract new cruise ships to Sitka. The Sitka Chamber of Commerce is concerned that Sitka voters may not vote in favor of the dock without these questions answered, and the negative implications of a "no" vote from the community could harm future cruise line visitor numbers. The Sitka Chamber does support the cruise industry in Sitka and we are requesting that the City do more research prior to putting this important topic on the ballot.
