BBB Links Business Ethics and Golf
Honesty, Integrity and Healthy Competition Are the Best Course
"Where do you fall on golf's honesty meter?" In a March 2012 survey of 2,015 golfers, Golf Digest found that the majority says it does not break the rules; and of those who occasionally bend, more than 89 percent believe that others do the same.
According to the Ethics Resource Center, the same mentality is true in business. Like golf, those who break the rules-and those who play by the rules-do so out of conformity. In the 2011 National Business Ethics Survey:
- 13 percent reported feeling pressure to compromise standards-higher than previous years.
- Of the employees who observed misconduct, 65 percent-an all time high-reported issues.
- "Keeping the job" is the top motivator for acting unethically or ethically.
"When it comes to golf and business, conformity seems to be the common ground," says Robert W.G. Andrew, CEO of Better Business Bureau serving Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington. "A strong internal ethics code is the best course of action for companies and individuals."

Alaska Business Report Card Group Releases Grades
Alaska State Chamber of Commerce Among Participating Organizations
The Alaska Business Report Card (ABRC) released grades on members of the 27th Alaska Legislature today. The report card is issued to give their collective memberships a clear sense of how each legislator, caucuses, and the Governor are working to create a healthy economic climate for business in Alaska. The ABRC is comprised of Alaska State Chamber of Commerce (Alaska Chamber), Alaska Support Industry Alliance, Prosperity Alaska and Resource Development Council for Alaska, Inc..
During the 2012 Legislative Fly-In (January 24-25,) Alaska Chamber members hand delivered a copy of its Legislative Priorities and Positions pamphlet to every legislator and the Governor which clearly outlined the top three priorities of the Alaska Chamber, all of its legislative positions, and the six policy areas for which they would be evaluated on by the ABRC.
The top three priorities selected by Alaska Chamber members during the Legislative Policy Forum in October, 2011 are: oil tax reform, litigation reform and reduce the high cost of energy. The six general policy areas outlined by ABRC are: fiscal responsibility, oil tax reform, regulatory efficiency, litigation reform, general business climate and strategic infrastructure.
The Alaska Chamber maintained an updated list of legislation it supported or opposed on its website throughout the 27th Alaska Legislative Session, based on its adopted positions and priorities established by members at the Policy Forum in Fall 2011. The Alaska Chamber supported or opposed a total of 46 pieces of legislation all of which were considered in the grading process.
Letter grades have been computed through an average of each participating organizations' scoring based on their respective legislative priorities. As in 2011, bill sponsorship, committee votes, floor votes, actions taken in committee when applicable and overall leadership in and outside of the legislature were considered in the grading process.
The ABRC notified each legislator and the Governor of their grade earlier today via email. The grades for the House and Senate majority and minority are: House Majority, A-, House Minority, D, Senate Majority, F , Senate Minority, A. Grades of individual legislators and the Governor are available online at www.alaskabusinessreportcard.com.
The Alaska Business Report Card was formed in 2010 in an effort to inform the participating organizations' member companies, which employ tens of thousands of Alaskans, of how elected officials are performing to ensure Alaska remains an attractive place for private sector investment, jobs, and economic growth.
