Greetings!

Your Next Generation of Workers - How Prepared are They?

The Sitka Chamber of Commerce Luncheon will be held at Harrigan Centennial Hall at Noon on Wednesday, February 8th.

Our speaker will be Don Levine from the Alaska Department of Education. Levine is an Education Specialist with 20 years in Career & Technical Education. This presentation will give you a glimpse at the "millennial" youth and how schools have prepared them for the world of work.  You will see an amazing number of quick, easy and free tools for preparing resumes, taking an assessment on math, work ethics or other skills, and developing a portfolio of accomplishments - all of which, employers want to see!  No young adult should show up at up at your workplace unprepared - not with these tools!

BBB Offers Safe Swiping Tips

Credit or debit? Choosing the right option at the right time can help protect from unwanted charges and skimming scams.

When charged, debit cards automatically withdraw money directly from checking accounts; whereas credit cards extract funds from credit accounts. Most credit issuers carry zero liability policies so card users can dispute unauthorized charges from fraud and undelivered products or services. Debit cards typically carry limited liability policies that require cardholders to cover a percentage of the lost funds.

"Debit cards can come in handy for many purchases," stated Robert W.G. Andrew, CEO of Better Business Bureau serving Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington. "But frankly, it's more difficult to recoup stolen funds from debit cards."

Due to built-in protections, BBB urges cardholders to choose credit over debit for certain purchases. BBB points out five dangerous transactions for debit cards:

Online Shopping: Websites, e-retailers and other online service providers may be trustworthy and well-intentioned, but there are other potential risks, such as: shared wireless networks, unsecure Internet connections, data breaches, company impostors, hackers and other online schemers. There is significant anonymity on the Web so shop safely; review companies carefully, read privacy policies and make sure sites are secure before releasing payment information.

ATM Cash: Skimmers tamper with automatic teller machines and card terminals by inserting skimming devices on card readers and installing miniature spy cameras. Only use monitored ATMs in well-lit areas near trusted banks and busy shopping centers. Avoid using machines with askew card slots and keypads.

Gas: Card skimmers also meddle with unattended pay-at-the-pump gas station terminals; low-traffic highway rest stops can be particularly vulnerable.

Dining and Drinking: Restaurants, food delivery services and bars sometimes keep customer payment information on file, hold cards for tabs or process payments behind closed doors. Once cards are out of sight, they are at risk of falling into the wrong hands; cards can get overcharged or copied and used without permission.

Down Payments and Deposits: Companies that sell expensive merchandise may offer layaway programs or allow consumers to reserve goods with deposits. It is best to charge pre-payments and pricey purchases on credit cards, in case businesses close unexpectedly or orders are not fulfilled.

Regardless of payment method, check retailers on bbb.org before buying.

Calling All Flappers & Fellas

Mark your calendar now for the 2012 Sitka Chamber Annual Banquet & Awards Night on Saturday, March 10th. This year's swanky event will take you back to a time that you don't want to miss, but we need your help!

Efforts are already underway to make this year's banquet even ritzier than ever. It will be an evening filled with delicious food, swell friends, and of course the Business of the Year award and the Cossack Cap! However, our Annual Banquet is much more than just another fun event. This is the Sitka Chamber's biggest fundraiser of the year! The funds raised are used to help us "promote, support and facilitate commerce and economic growth in the community" throughout the year.

As a sponsor of the banquet you show that your business cares about Sitka and the local economy. To learn more about sponsoring, please see the attached sponsorship form or call the Sitka Chamber of Commerce today!

2012 Green Business Award Data Lost

Nearly all of the electronic 2012 Sitka Green Business Award nominations and data were lost recently in a computer meltdown. The Sitka Global Warming Group/Sustainable Sitka (SGWG/SS) is asking all Sitka businesses, organizations, agencies, and customers to re-submit nominations for this year's Green Business Awards. With the loss of data (and work on the project), presentation of the awards may be delayed slightly.

Award nomination forms are available by contacting Michelle Putz at 747-2708, by emailing info@sitkaglobalwarming.org, or at  http://www.sitkaglobalwarming.org/green_practices_nomination.html.

Nominations should be re-submitted by February 29.  New nominations for businesses/organizations/agencies using "green" (sustainable) business practices in 2011 are also welcome.

SGWG/SS apologizes to everyone for making them repeat the nomination process. They recommend people look in their 'sent' files and resend their original nomination.  They still hope to get out awards before the visitor season begins.
