| Got Dust? |
Dust can wreak havoc on your electronics. All those little holes that let the heat out will also let the dust in and cause your electronics to overheat. Cans of compressed air can be used to blow dust away from all vents and openings. Remember to dust often to avoid overheating and malfunction of your electronics. (Note: To get a really deep clean, you'll need to remove the outside casing of your computer or other device. Since this will often void your warranty, it's best to leave the deep clean to the professionals.)

An Ounce of Bounce
Ever wonder why your TV and computer screens are dust magnets? That's because they are! Static electricity builds up on the screen and attracts dust particles in the air. To help eliminate static cling, wipe your screen with a used sheet of Bounce®. Those little dryer sheets were designed to help eliminate static cling on your clothes and can help keep the dust from resettling on your TV and computer screens.

The Right Tool
To avoid damaging the exterior of your devices, make sure to use a cleaning solution made specifically for electronics. And remember to spray the cloth, not the screen. Never use paper towels because, after all, paper is made from wood. Paper towels can easily scratch delicate surfaces. And a regular cloth will usually just move dust around so instead, use a microfiber cloth which is designed to trap dust particles.

What a Dump!
Electronic waste, also known as e-waste, poses environmental concerns. Electronics contain a significant amount of lead. In particular, old TVs with cathode ray tubes can contain 4 or more pounds of lead. Flat panel monitors often contain mercury. As of January 1, 2012, there is now a ban on certain electronic devices in Illinois landfills so keep that in mind if you need to dispose of old electronics. For more information about recycling these items, visit the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County at swalco.org.
