WRAP Training Offered for
Behavioral Health Workers

On Thursday, 6/10/10 the MHANJ's Community Education Department will offer WRAP training for behavioral health providers.  Participants will learn to write a Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP®), which will allow them to teach this process to their clients.

Other topics to be covered include the 5 key recovery concepts that are the foundation of WRAP, creating a recovery environment, a six dimensional model of wellness, and strategies for working with consumers on developing and utilizing a WRAP.

This workshop will run from 9:30 am - 4:00 pm at our Montclair training facility.  There is a $15 fee for this workshop which includes a binder of WRAP related materials.  Please contact Emma Shelby, Certified WRAP trainer at 973-571-4100 x113 or eshelby@mhanj.org for more information or to register.

Greetings!

Spring has finally arrived!  For most of us, the winter has been a long, cold and snowy one.  Our desire to see the earth turn green, hear the birds start to sing again, and feel the sun on our skin made us long for winter to hang its head and leave.

The change in season has allowed many of us head for the outdoors to enjoy the balmy days.  Just taking a brief walk and breathing in the fresh air seems to make us feel better.  New research tells us that this greater feeling of contentment and increased sense of well being is not just our imagination.

Be sure to read "Five minutes of exercise in nature improves mental health" for some facinating information about nature and our mental health.

Wishing you good mental health and overall well-being!

MHANJ Offers Help to Inmates with Mental Illness
Peers to Peers in Jail

" The final clang of the bars made me wonder...am I safe in here? And then 'Here but for the grace of God'..." CA/POST worker - Ocean County Jail

The Problem:
The Corrections System has become the residence of necessity for many pepole with mental illness who are not receiving treatment.  How does an advocacy organization like MHANJ affect change in this systems problem? How do we offer creative solutions that will help consumers/inmates somewhere along the continuum of arrest/adjudication/confinement in jail? During these difficult economic times there will probably be few additions to our existing community mental health system. What will make a difference?Prison

MHANJ's Solution:
MHANJ responds to this dilemma by using peers to take services into the jails. Our POST (Peer Outreach Support Team) workers go into county jails, link to inmates with mental illness, teach them what treatment options exist when they leave, and help them successfully transition back into the community.

POST workers are individuals who have suffered mental illness themselves and are now employed by MHANJ. In both Atlantic and Ocean Counties they go into the county jails to advocate, educate, and refer. Their goal is to provide a safety net for inmates until their release. By sharing their personal stories they quickly break down barriers and build trust. They run groups including Anger Management and Double Trouble, the latter geared to help those struggling with recovery from substance abuse and mental illness. The success of the programs is in the information and the personal connection that encourages participation and follow up with mental health care. The success is that inmates know that people in similar circumstances have prevailed and are making a go of it in the community while reaching one hand back to help others.
