Audio interview available on-line, too.

The July 2008 issue of AOPA Pilot magazine includes a feature on Vertical Power, in which the system is characterized as "your electronic workload-reduction device." Associate Editor Steve Ells writes about the system's capabilities, and includes an audio interview with me when we met at Sun 'n Fun earlier this year. If you can't make it to a show to see the VP-200, the interview may be the next best thing! Note that AOPA membership is required to listen to the audio.

Cutting-Edge Panels
A monthly feature highlighting modern and innovative instrument panel design.

John Nystrom's RV-7
This panel, which John built himself, features a Vertical Power VP-200, dual Grand Rapids screens, a Garmin stack, and a TruTrak autopilot. Engine data is provided by a Grand Rapids EIS, which is blind mounted behind the panel.

The VP-200 was retrofitted into an existing RV-7, and now has about 100 hours on it.

John cut out the entire panel by hand, then primed and sprayed it with a dark gray paint. The electrical architecture is a single bus, dual alternator system. The main alternator is a 60A externally-regulated alternator, and the backup is a 20A pad-mounted alternator from B&C Specialty Products.

John writes "I'm a big fan of new technology, and when I saw the VP-200 and all it could do I was hooked. The last 100 hours since the retrofit with the VP-200 have been very reliable. I wired some backup circuits and have not had to use them. Nevertheless, it's always prudent to have backups for critical functions.

Initially, I would watch the system closely but after about 10-20 hours of flying with it I became very comfortable and learned to trust the automation. The mode-changing logic works well and I like having the ability to manually control things when the need arises.  The retrofit also gave me a chance to get back into the electrical system and clean up some things from the initial build and subsequent modifications before the retrofit."
