NBD Offers New "As-Built" Scanning Technology

Nevada By Design through our technology partner Tridex Solutions, is offering the newest technology in scanning and digital formatting that could be, not only a cost savings, but a solution to the entire facility/asset inventory and logistical dilemma for any organization.

The technology is actually a combination of three different technologies (Laser Scanner collects LiDAR information, Digital Camera collects high resolution RGB information Global Positioning System (GPS) unit, consisting of dual-frequency GPS receiver, antenna, UHF radio, and power source), details of this unit are in the attached document.

With this technology we can scan a building in one day, process the information the next and on the third day deliver to you; a 3d rendering (complete with color, texture, measurable dimensions to 1/100th of an inch, elevations, GIS information).  You can merge this information into AutoDesk, Bently, ArchiCad, Graphisoft, BIM or a variety of other industry programs within the Architectural and Engineering software market place. Other companies provide scanning but no other company can produce it in a 3-D format and merge it into an architectural related program.

This technology could result in some of the following benefits:

1.      Develop a complete digital inventory of each facility with all information and data tied together through GPS into a GIS format

2.      Capture interior as well as exterior elevations with horizontal and vertical measurements

3.      Ability to manipulate your specific information and data on your own software

4.      Utilize as base for making changes and modifications in the future

5.      Develop long range facility preventative maintenance schedules

6.      Develop a complete asset inventory of all infrastructure

7.      Prepare exhibits for specific subjects and public information

We would like make a presentation to you and your colleagues at your earliest convenience. Seeing this technology up close and personal will certainly open up your mind to new ideas and opportunities. Call Michael or Craig at (702) 938-1525 to arrange for a special presentation, at your convenience.

Oh and by the way, we can offer this product at a cost of approximately $7,500 per day.  How much do you spend creating As-Built drawings.
The primary mission of Nevada By Design ("NBD"), is to provide sustainable, high quality civil engineering designs, services, and build-able solutions to our clients.

Woooooshhhhh!

By: Craig A. Ruark, LEED AP

Here I sit starting at a blank page, watching the stock market plummet, wondering what I can write in the next newsletter that will stimulate business during this time of economic uncertainty.  In the past I have written about "Integrity", "Quality", and "Service"; the ideals that make Nevada By Design a great firm for which to work and demonstrates the attention we give to clients.

After subsequent deep thought, I have chosen to write about the extent to which one firm went in an effort to prove to me the quality of their product.

You see, back in early March, I was working the registration desk for the "Hotel Developers Green Convention", held at the Green Valley Ranch.  In the afternoon I walked around the convention floor speaking with the trade show exhibitors.  One of the exhibitors was Wendy Grossmann, Corporate Account Executive Worldwide for Kohler.  As I approached the booth I saw Wendy, proudly sitting on one of the many toilets displayed in the booth.  Wendy greeted me from her comfortable perch and asked me if I had seen their new line of "low flow" toilets.  I replied that we have a "low flow" toilet in our office; in fact it was such a low flow that when you finished your job; you flushed twice, plunged once, and flushed again to clear the bowl.  A 1.2 gal per flush turned out to be a 3.6 gal event.  Wendy then asked a couple of questions about the type of toilet, shape, color and how long it had been installed, then asked me for a business card which I was obliged to give.  After taking my card, Wendy told me that she would be sending a free toilet to our company.

A couple months later our new toilet arrived in three different shipments just as Wendy had promised.  After four hours on a Friday afternoon (as you can tell I am not a plumber), and a little help from Clayton Neilsen, P.E. extraordinaire,  the installation was complete and I turn on the water to our new toilet.  No leaks!  Things were looking up.  Now I have to tell you that this new toilet came with a Slone Flushmate pressure tank that uses 1.4 gal (or less) of water per flush.  Due to my plumbing skills, I was a little hesitant to push the lever the first time but I did, and Woooooshhhhh, the pressure was fantastic and the toilet has been a wonderful improvement to our office.  Not to mention the fact that I have not had the plunger in my hand since the installation.

When asked the question, I didn't really know if our old toilet was a Kohler that did not work efficiently (which by the way it was not), or some other brand.  Regardless, if it was or not, Wendy did not have to offer to replace our existing toilet with her latest model.  In fact, as a civil engineering firm she had nothing to gain by giving us the toilet as we do not specify plumbing fixtures in our engineering designs.  However, Wendy knew the quality of her product and she also understands what it means to have a satisfied customer.  Wendy's gesture also demonstrated the integrity of both her company and its employees.

In my job, I attend over a dozen professional meetings and functions a month.  As I speak with perspective clients, eighty percent of them tell me that they; 'wish they can find a quality civil engineer!'  Please note that NBD is not the only firm providing quality engineering service in Las Vegas and there are many reasons for client dissatisfaction - but that would be the subject for another time.  However, as a civil engineering firm we don't have tangible items (like a toilet), to give away to potential customers, so it is difficult to show the quality of our work without actually being hired to do a project.

Of course we would like to prove ourselves on your next project but some people are hesitant to change horses so to speak, even if they are losing the race.  So here is my suggestion.  The next time you as an architect, contractor or developer, run into a civil engineering problem that seems to be holding up your project and your current engineer seems perplexed, give us a call.  If it does not involve starting the engineering from scratch, we will look over the problem and see if we can give you a quick suggestion to take back to your engineer.  It may be as simple as a fresh way of thinking that brings forward a new workable idea, or at the worse we can help confirm that your current path is the only choice.  Regardless of the outcome, it will give you a chance to see how we approach a project.

At NBD, we strive to give you that Woooooshhhhh feeling as we make your civil engineering challenges disappear.

Green Tip
Drive Through 1

America has become the land of convenience and it has taken a toll on both our bodies and the environment.  We no longer walk; we drive and whenever possible we use the drive-through.  Think about it, we wait in the drive-through line at the bank, coffee shops, fast food places, pharmacy, dry cleaners, etc.  That can add up to a lot of engine idle time.

Did you know that the average six cylinder automobile burns .024 gallons of fuel per minute and contributes 19.4 lbs of CO2 per gallon? That means, if you idle for sixty minutes per day at drive-through windows alone (not counting all the time you idle in traffic), you would be wasting 1.44 gallons of fuel and emitting nearly 29 lbs of CO2 into the atmosphere.

On December 8, 2007, the Canadian Press reported that; "Students at the University of Alberta monitored a popular Tim Hortons outlet in Edmonton last year for 54 hours and counted 3,756 vehicles idling for an average of more than five minutes each. The longest idle was more than 12 minutes." Additionally, the Edmonton Sun reported that, "A 2006 University of Alberta study found that vehicles idling in fast-food drive-through lanes across Edmonton contribute about 8,600 tons of emissions per year into the atmosphere.

Cities across North America have not been standing idly by watching all this idling.  In Canada several cities have banned drive-through lanes at restaurants.  In the U.S., two cities in California and one in North Carolina have imposed moratoriums on drive-through lanes for new construction.

So the next time you go for that low fat latté, do yourself a favor and avoid the drive-through.  You will help the environment and your body.  Who knows, you might meet someone nice while waiting in line and make a friend.

Oh, and speaking of health... did you know that a 125 lb person burns 38 calories in thirty minutes of line standing and a person weighing 185 lbs burns 56 calories in the same amount of time?
