Spotlight Project

Centenial Library

Centennial Hills Library

The Centennial Hills Library is located on seven acres near the corner of Buffalo Drive and Deer Springs Way.  This new 45.5 K square foot facility will add a much-needed source of educational and recreational reading material for young and old alike.

NBD worked with JMA Architecture to develop the project site by providing horizontal control, grading plans, on-site utility plans, off-site improvement plans, easement preparation, details, water network analysis, drainage study, and traffic study.

An important aspect of this project is the LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Dsign) Gold level certification that will be requested when the project is completed.  Toward that certification, Clayton Neilsen of NBD designed an Offsite and Onsite Drainage Basin as part of the storm water management system utilizing a product developed by "StormTech"..

Because of certain community restrictions, soil conditions, and the amount of rainfall that is received here in Las Vegas Valley the StormTech underground detention system will be designed to capture the 100-year event and then discharge the captured stormwater at a rate at least 25% less than design storm.

Additionally in LEED another point will be obtained through the implementation of a stormwater management plan that reduces impervious cover, promotes infiltration, and captures and treats the stormwater runoff from 90% of the average annual rainfall using acceptable Best Management Practices (BMP's).

The BMP that is recommended will be what they call a structural control and will be a combination of the detention basin prescribed previously and a facility that removes the Total Suspended Solids (TSS's) and the oil/grease/gasoline from the stormwater through a chamber system.

Through the use of the chamber system, as well as the StormTech detention system, the overall quality of the storm water that will be conveyed from this site will be cleaner as it enters the Las Vegas Wash.

Innovative Civil Engineering

for Visionary Clients

Celebrating our 10th anniversary, Nevada By Design (NBD), has adopted the "Integrated Design Approach" as its business philosophy and as such works as part of a collective with the owner and stakeholders to understand and develop all aspects of the design, which can then emerge organically, with the full benefit of each expert's input.  We are members of the U.S. Green Building Council and supporters of the USGBC - Nevada Chapter.  Two of our civil engineers are currently studying to become the first LEED certified civil engineers in Las Vegas.

NBD PROPOSAL PROCESS

Many clients are, at first quite perplexed, yet very pleased the first time they receive a proposal quote from Nevada By Design.

Why?  You ask.

Because Nevada By Design (NBD), conducts business in a little different manner than other civil engineering firms.

You see; NBD understands what it takes to construct a project and be base our designs on site constructability.  We take the time to walk the site, research the proximity of existing utilities, and identify submittals that need to be completed for project approval by regulatory agencies.  And, because we do our homework, our scope of work is spelled out in total detail leaving nothing to surprise.  What that means to you, the Client, is that NBD does not come back with "ad-on's" or "scope creep" and raise the price midway through the project.  Unless the project itself changes our price does not change.  A very important element when you are going to the bank.

In addition to our up-front due diligence, NBD has a philosophy about how it performs work.

Nevada By Design (NBD) strives for project clients that understand and appreciate our business philosophy.  Under the "integrated design approach", the project team is able to align the skills, talents and energies of a diverse group of people to bring about a project that surpasses the expectations of the client and the ideas of any single individual involved in the process. This integrated design approach creates an energizing and empowering work culture where dynamic, self-motivated individuals thrive.

The integrated design approach leads to several office practices that support the success of these ideals:

  • ideas measured against what's good for the client and project - not who authored them
  • empowering staff to make decisions at the client point of contact
  • responsibility that is based on ability, not years of service
  • accelerating individual's impact and contributions at every level, from design through delivery
  • regularly sharing organizational and project ideology and goals to ensure alignment with individual skills and goals
  • developing self-directed learning plans for each employee
  • providing a mentoring program for individuals at all levels of the organization

These, along with many other systems and cultural norms, allow NBD to support unique and focused individual growth within a fluctuating and dynamic team environment.

So, before you rush to view the bottom line of our design costs, please be aware that our number may appear higher than any other proposals that you receive.  Does that mean that NBD is better than any other firm?  Well, we will leave that question up to you to answer.  However, we will say that our project team takes pride in working with the client to bring your project to life.

Your ideas - we make them work!
