I'm excited to announce that I will be teaching a new workshop, Treating Complex Stress Disorders with Mindfulness and Mind-Body Healing in Paris, France on 27-28 September. Download and explore the course syllabus at http://ietsp.free.fr/pdf/september-2008_English_Brochure.pdf and download enrollment information at http://ietsp.free.fr/pdf/Inscription_Seminaire.pdf. This is a wonderful time to visit Paris, so please consider joining us (there will, of course, be French translation).

There is still time to register for the ego-state therapy workshops in Vienna including the post-conference advanced workshop on Monday, September 22. Please go to www.maggiephillipsphd.com/courses_egostate.html for more information. Also consider the week intensive in Ego-State Therapy sponsored by the Milton Erickson Institute of Rottweil, Germany, from 29 September-3 October; visit www.meg-rottweil.de for more information. All of these workshop hours will count toward certification in ego-state therapy.

I will also be teaching a workshop in Heidelberg, Germany on Saturday and Sunday, 4-5 October on Multi-Modal Approaches to Healing Post-Traumatic Pain. This workshop will include methods drawn from mindfulness, breathing and meditation, Somatic Experiencing®, ego-state therapy, formal hypnosis, interactive guided imagery, Energy Psychology and EMDR. Participants will learn how to build individualized, highly effective protocols that address both emotional and physical pain as well as the trauma components that often block healing. As you may know, I have been very much involved in helping to organize disaster relief related to the recent earthquake near Chengdu, China. I am happy to report that we are very close to receiving funding for the teams that will be sent to China through the Foundation for Human Enrichment, the non-profit organization connected with Somatic Experiencing®. Dr. Laurie Leitch, research director of the FHE, will be traveling on July 7 to set up research efforts and make sure that all is ready for the clinical teams. Lisa LaDue, MSW, will be leading the first 4-person team that will be training volunteers and professionals who work with traumatized children during a two week period from July 19-July 26 and from July 28-August 3.

If you are fluent in Mandarin as well as English, please feel free to download a volunteer assistant/translator form at www.maggiephillipsphd.com/_private_/volapp.rtf. Please email your application to Jamie Yang at jamieyang8@hotmail.com to be received by Friday, July 4, describing your availability, background in SE, ability in English / Mandarin / and any other relevant dialect, contact information, and any other relevant remarks. I am very happy that those of us connected with FHE are working closely with Dr. Rob Blinn to coordinate the training on-site, and with Paul Chung, who has helped with funding efforts in China. Rob and Paul were my students in the first SE training in Asia, held in Hong Kong in late April/early May.

We also need financial donations for these efforts. If you are interested in making a tax-deductible contribution through FHE, please visit www.traumahealing.com and click on the "Donate Now" button. Whatever help you can give will be deeply appreciated.

I am also happy to share with you information just published by the National Institute for the Clinical Application of Behavioral Medicine (NICABM) in a report entitled, "The Mind Body Medicine Update Report." This report discusses the history and evolution of the field of Mind Body Medicine, beginning with Robert Ader's findings in the 1970's on psychoneuroimmunology, a term he created to describe the interplay between the nervous and immune systems.

Among the specific conditions most amenable to mind/body treatment are digestive issues, chronic pain, trauma and PTSD, conditions related to inflammation, sugar addiction and insulin resistance, weight management, and sleep disorders. The report also identifies and discusses a wide array of promising tools such as mindfulness meditation, hypnosis, guided imagery, neuroscience methods to rewire the brain for greater emotional flexibility, energy psychology and positive psychology, and some of the newer trauma therapies including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and the Trauma Resiliency Model. The report ends with helpful suggestions about how to get started in the field of mindbody medicine.
