I bring you greetings from the annual Energy Psychology conference in Northern Virginia!

This conference is one of my favorites because so many exciting speakers and events inspire me each year. This year, presenters include Rupert Sheldrake, who has written about such subjects as remote healing, animal intelligence and instinct, and morphogenetic fields -- all fascinating topics to me. Christine Page is speaking on intuition and Her Holiness Sai Ma presented a moving plenary on the art of forgiveness.

Think about joining us next year on the west coast. The dates will be late May or early June. To learn more, visit the ACEP website at www.energypsych.org.

  • Healing the Pain of Trauma
  • My interest in treating chronic pain continues to grow. In a recent USA Today (April 19, 2007), a front page "Snapshot" predicts that by 2030, 25% of the adult US population is projected to have doctor-diagnosed arthritis. And that figure does not include other types of pain conditions!

Here at the Energy Psychology conference, I presented a workshop entitled Healing the Pain of Trauma, and will also teach a post conference workshop on Reversing the Effects of Trauma, which includes pain conditions.

  • Treating Chronic Pain Among Veterans
  • I'm especially delighted to be getting involved in an ACEP sponsored research project on treating chronic pain among veterans. We are focusing on those who are returning from Iraq. As you know, there is a huge need there, and we hope to validate a simple protocol based on Energy Psychology to provide rapid and lasting relief from physical as well as emotional pain. I'll keep you posted on our progress.

  • Advances in Energy Psychology
  • This course begins on May 7,
    so please don't delay!

    Online Course

For those of you with an interest in Energy Psychology, I will be offering an 8- week online course: Advances in Energy Psychology, sponsored by the National Institute of Clinical Applications of Behavioral Medicine (NICABM).

This course will allow you to get a firm grasp of many of the principles and practices in Energy Psychology. For those of you who have already studied in this field, the course will allow you to strengthen your sense of confidence in using energy tools.

The course provides 24 hours of distance learning CEUs for licensed professionals, including psychologists.

Each week, you will receive written materials and listen to an audio presentation. Assignments encourage the application of skills for your own self-care as well as for use with clients and others. I have received consistently positive feedback about the course from both beginners and advanced students.

To learn more about the course and to register, please visit: http://www.nicabm.com/program/courses/energy_psychology/index-01.html

  • Back Pain Tips:
  • website image

Back pain is the #1 cause of absences from work. After receiving a thorough medical evaluation to make sure structural problems have been considered, the back pain patient can use some of the following strategies to make a significant difference in back pain:

    1) Learn how to connect with the body in a neutral, if not relaxing way
    2) Know when to distract from pain that is serving no useful purpose
    3) Refocus mental attention on visual imagery, sounds, positive sensations, and affirming thoughts to bring relief
    4) Separate from or disconnect from the heart of the pain by focusing on the less painful sensations in that area, imagining a numbing anesthetic, or divide the pain sensations into various parts to reduce the total impact.

I hope this spring season will bring you opportunities to seek antidotes to pain of all sources for yourself, those you love, and those you work with.

    Warmest wishes,
    Maggie
