California Revels Newsletter
November 2007
Dear Reveler,

Here in Oakland, preparations for the 2007 Christmas Revels are well under way.  We have a really wonderful and beautiful show to celebrate the Winter Solstice and to welcome Yule based on the holiday traditions of rural and rustic 19th century England.

Meanwhile, out in space, the very 21st century Shuttle Discovery astronauts have been engaging in a bit of Revels too.  See the accompanying article and the link to the video.

All of us at California Revels wish you a healthy and abundent harvest season and we look forward to sharing the shortest day with you at the Scottish Rite Theater next month.

In celebration,

Dirk Burns, Executive Director

Christmas Revels Featured Performer: Geoff Hoyle

Christmas Revels As most Revelers know by now Geoff Hoyle who was last seen as Will Kemp in our 2003 Christmas Revels is our featured performer again this year.  Geoff always adds a special spice to the holiday merriment with his unique brand of comic antics.

Actor, writer, comedian and musician (yes, musician!) Geoff came to the U.S. from England and joined Larry Pisoni and Bill Irwin as a clown in the Pickle Family Circus. He went on to play numerous roles in the Bay Area notably at A.C.T., Berkeley Rep and The Eureka Theatre. He has clowned with Cirque du Soleil and Circus Flora. His award-winning shows Boomer!, Feast of Fools, The Convict?s Return, Geni(us) and The First Hundred Years have been seen in New York, San Francisco, Paris, London, Berlin, Taiwan, England and the former Soviet Union. He created the role of Zazu (Drama Desk nomination: Best Featured Actor in a Musical) in the original Broadway cast of The Lion King. He received five NEA grants and an ArtsLink grant to visit circuses in Latvia and Russia. Film and television appearances include Joyce Chopra's Smooth Talk and Robert Altman's Popeye. Currently, Geoff can be seen in the San Francisco Teatro ZinZanni tent as Li'l Vloddy the baby, Mrs. McCracken and Chef Volodya.

The 2007 Christmas Revels will mark the 6th winter show in which Geoff has appeared, but Revelers who attended our Summer Solstice Gala last June got to see his comic work "up close and personal" as he created an entire comic skit using only members of the audience.

Geoff has become one of our most popular featured players in the California Revels company.  We are thrilled to have him back with us again this year.
