This spring California Revels will celebrate May Day not once but twice...albeit neither one on May 1st, but we are well used to stretching or compressing time.

On April 29th at 1pm the entire family is invited to participate as the Revels return once again to the Oakland Zoo for our annual Mayday celebration. The traditional Maypole dance is only the beginning as singers, dancers and fiddlers gather to welcome in the merry month of May. There is plenty for both kids and adults to see and do as the Revels Solstice Ensemble not only serenades you but leads you in song. They'll even invite you to join them in dancing the "Helston Furry Dance".  Special events will include the coronation of the 2007 "Queen of the May", and there are rumors of an appearance by the exceedingly rare and wonderful Padstow "Obby Oss".  Of course the Deer Creek Morris Team will be on hand to delight you with their bells and capers.  This event is free with regular zoo admission.  Find us at the stage in the Children's Zoo area.

The following Sunday, May 6th at 2pm, join us along with several teams of Morris Dancers as we take over the Pelican Inn at Muir Beach for more revelling.  We will feature dancing on the lawn, another appearance by the "Obby Oss" and then we will repair to the inn for an old fashioned pub sing. There is no cover charge for this event.  Come lift a pint and raise your voice with us in celebration of the season.

Christmas Revels Choral Auditions
Revels Chorus
The 2007 Christmas Revels will step back in time 100 years when we visit the holiday traditions of rural England during the reigns of Queen Victoria and King Edward VII.

We are always looking for performers for our adult and children's choruses from across a wide range of ethnicities, ages and sizes.  This year auditions for adults and teens will be on June 9th and 10th.  Children ages 7-12 will audition the following Saturday, June 16th. As I write this, we are in the midst of one of the California Revels' liveliest Spring seasons ever.  The Solstice Ensemble highlighted a very fine St. Patrick's Day  program at the Scottish Rite Theatre. Appearing at a fundraiser for our home performance space, we performed a bill of traditional Irish and Scottish songs that anticipated the coming Vernal Equinox and "drove the cold winter away".

Coming up, as you will read elsewhere in this newsletter, are two Mayday Celebrations and a gala Festival on the Summer Solstice. The Fall will herald Street Fair season and the opportunity to present yet another repertoire of harvest and autumn-themed material. Under the expert guidance of Dave Watt and Helen Wills Brown, the Solstice Ensemble now offers Revelers the opportunity to revel year 'round.

In the midst of all this gaiety and celebration, we are also looking forward to the Winter Solstice. Plans for the 2007 Christmas show are rapidly falling into place, and it is shaping up to be a classic.  Fred Goff, Shira Kammen and I have been cooking up an exciting potpourri of musical possibilities. While I can't tell you all of the details, nor can I name all of the players just yet, I can spin out a rough outline of the festivities:

We will be touring the English countryside in the mid to late nineteenth century, following in the footsteps of a "Songcatcher" as he goes about collecting music, dance and folk traditions.  With a working title of "Nineteenth Century English Rustic", the show will include large helpings of pub songs, village carols, country dancing, mumming, Morris, and even music hall.

Of course the Revels standards will all be front and center. The Abbots Bromley  Dance and Sussex Mummers Carol will never look more at home. I have been talking to several featured performers and tradition-bearers, and while I can't divulge any names just yet, I think Revelers will be pleased to welcome back some familiar faces. And one more thing - gentlemen and ladies, dust off your dancing shoes because heys will be cast and capers cut!

Extraordinary Knowing By Elizabeth Lloyd Mayer
Extraordinary Knowing by Elizabeth Lloyd Mayer

"In December 1991, my daughter's harp was stolen; we got it back. But it came back in a way that irrevocably changed my familiar world of science and rational thinking. It changed the way I go about living in the world. It changed the way I perceive the world and try to make sense of it."  So begins the true story by California Revels founding Artistic Director, Elizabeth Lloyd "Lisby" Mayer.  Finished only days before her death in 2005, Extraordinary Knowing has just been published by Bantam books and has been glowingly reviewed in Newsweek and "O" Magazine, among others.. 304pp.  $26 + $4 tax, shipping and handling.
