Have you every heard funny sounding terms regarding internet security and have no idea what they actually mean? Have no fear! Here is some food for thought about these scary breaches of security so that you can better understand what they are and how to protect yourself against them!
Spoofing
Spoofing occurs when a person masquerades as another person or business and sends an official looking email to trick receivers to click on a link that automatically installs malware or a virus. The malware then takes the receiver's name from their email account, and uses it to email the contacts it steals from their address book the same link it sent them, causing the cycle to repeat over and over again.
Phishing
Phishing also happens when a hacker pretends to be someone they are not, but it is in order to gain access to someone else's sensitive information. The scam usually is in the form of an e-mail that appears to be authentic and requests that the receiver email them back immediately with information so that personal information can be updated, such as a bank account, credit card number, or Social Security number. The receiver is duped into believing that they are sending information to a safe source and may also reveal user names or passwords.
Whaling
Whaling is comparable to phishing, yet it is a more targeted form that pursues a specific person or organization. The email would contain messages that specifically appeal to the target, such as including their name in the email. The email has a link in it with an embedded code that allows the hacker to infect their computer and access all their files. In most situations the target is an executive or has a great deal of power, thus significantly more to lose than the average person should their confidential information be stolen.
Pharming
Pharming is also comparable to phishing, but it causes malware or a virus to be installed in the receiver's computer just by opening the email - it isn't even necessary to click a link. The virus in the computer then redirects the receiver to fraudulent websites even if they type legitimate addresses into the search bar.
There are however measures you can take to ensure that you are not affected by any of these attacks - anti-virus and anti-Spyware programs in addition to a firewall. Also, never open an email that you are unsure about!
