Greetings!
Training your staff is like managing an investment
portfolio. As a manager or leader, you invest your
knowledge, skills and experience in new employees,
readying them to be productive team members. You
also spend time and company resources to ensure
their success.
Of course, as expected with any portfolio, you
anticipate a solid return. The training
investment "pays back" as your staff delivers company
objectives and improves performance. Often, the
more you invest in training and development, the
better your returns evidenced by superior performance
and business results.
With your own nest egg, you might review the
progress quarterly and the same goes for
employees. It all depends on how the management
process has been established. Regardless of how
things work in the company, goals can be assessed
more frequently than the traditional yearly review.
Measuring performance keeps you informed on how
your investments are doing and the same holds true
for your staff. Knowing what is expected and having
clear ways to measure results, helps management
and staff remain focused. Providing consistent
opportunities for accountability motivates workers and
helps everyone stay on track.
And, there's one more coveted dividend related to
training and development investment - high morale
among employees, the value of which has been
proven many times over. Every time you invest in your
staff, you demonstrate a strong belief in and support
of them, fueling the fire for their future endeavors. Staff
members feel appreciated, valued, and
acknowledged, resulting in stronger productivity levels.
So the next time you look at your budget and think
about where you can trim the fat, do your best to leave
training and development in tact, which tends to pays
back with strong dividends in productivity,
performance, achieving goals, and employee morale.
All of these results are certainly worthy of your
investments.
