Four "C's" that Motivate Your Team to Success
  February 12, 2007

Greetings!

Is your staff lacking motivation? You may have tried many things, but nothing is working. Well all that will be in the past when you Put the Four C's to work and watch your team get involved, excited, and busy!

1) Clarity Everything goes more smoothly when people know what they are working towards. That's why the first step is providing clarity by identifying the top five projects for your team. Develop a company or department mission statement, long-term vision, and yearly goals. Clarity provides a clear cut focus which enables everyone to move forward toward the same over-arching goals and stay connected to the big picture. Be clear about what needs to be done, who is responsible and the due date.

2) Communicate Spend time informing your employees of the company or department mission, long-term vision, and yearly goals. Communication is the key to a well-run organization. Open communication eliminates confusion and gets a team aligned and working together. Clearly communicate what is expected and what needs to be done for the best possible results. Encourage communication among all levels of employees from the very top to building maintenance. Including everyone is the fastest way to create unity and a well-oiled machine.

3) Complete Create a plan to tackle big projects and then complete them! Provide assistance to work through obstacles and ensure projects come to completion. Focus on the end product and tying up loose ends. Finish assigned tasks before moving on to the next item.

4) Celebrate Take time to celebrate and feel good! Sometimes people get so task oriented that the accomplishment gets overlooked as people rush towards the next goal. But this important step is critical for morale and continued high energy levels.

Instead, make a conscious effort to rejoice in reaching company or department goals. Do something that includes everyone at all levels. Acknowledge people's contribution, provide personal recognition, demonstrate your appreciation, and reward their efforts! Nothing works better to cement a team and encourage future hard work.

The celebration doesn?t have to take up a lot of time to have impact. Take an hour to serve pizza for lunch, make sundaes, or announce team member's names. Point out individual contributions too. This sends a loud and clear message demonstrating the reward for hard work and achieving goals. Recognition is the single most important compensation that people want, sometimes more than money. When using the four C's, you have a plan that works. People not only know what they have to do, know when projects are due and what is expected, but can look forward to publicly enjoying the rewards as well. The four C's will make goals clear and motivate your team. It will take some planning, but the team effort and results will be more than worthwhile for everyone involved.
