On Monday, Sept. 17, the Pacific Northwest Innovation Summit kicks off as part of the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Seattle World's Fair.
We hope you will join us for this important and consequential gathering, where we will strive to put Pacific Northwest on the map as the innovation capital of the world. The event aims to raise prosperity and quality of life to a whole new level through better leveraging of the human capital, innovative assets, and natural resources already present in the provinces and states of the region.
 Monday speaker Yorum Bauman, standup economistTuesday speaker Frank Blethen, publisher and chief executive of The Seattle Times Tuesday speaker Lt. Governor Brad Owen of Washington State. Rather than an emphasis on speeches and PowerPoint slides, the summit will focus on talent, probing questions, honest dialogue and insightful answers.
Things will kick off with an evening networking reception for registered delegates at 6:30 pm, Monday, Sept. 17, and will be followed by a lively talk by the first nationally acclaimed comedian economist Yorum Baumann, PhD called "What's so funny about the Great Recession?"
The following day, Tuesday, Sept. 18 will feature Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn; Lt. Governor Brad Owen of Washington State; and Frank Blethen, Publisher and Chief Executive of The Seattle Times. Tuesday's agenda will focus on four topics.
Panel One will investigate the secret sauce of a successful innovation economy. Washington State will be the case study. Confirmed panelists are:
· Roger Woodworth, Chief Strategy Officer at Avista Corp. and Chair of the Washington Economic Development Commission (WEDC) advisors to the Governor and legislature on economic development strategy.
· Elson S. Floyd, President, Washington State University and earlier served as executive director of the Washington State Higher Education Coordinating Board.
· Rogers Weed, Director, Commerce Department, member WEDC and former Microsoft executive.
· Cindy Zehnder, Chair of the Washington Workforce Board and former Chief of Staff to Governor Chris Gregoire.
· Randy Gardiner, Chairman, President, CEO, Red Dot and Board Member of the Center for Advanced Manufacturing Puget Sound (CAMPS), WEDC member.
· Christina Lomasney, Co-founder, President, CEO of Modumetal pioneering revolutionary nanolaminated alloys and member WEDC.
· Egils Milbergs, Executive Director, WEDC, will serve as moderator.
· Michael Kluse, Director of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory doing $1.1 billion in research and innovation across multiple disciplines.
Panel Two will address significant cross-border opportunities underway in applied research, alternative energy systems, smart grid, transportation and other areas. Confirmed panelists include:
· Senator Jim Kastama, Chair, Senate Economic Development, Trade and Innovation Committee and co-chair of the PNWER Innovation Working Group.
· Miles Drake, Senior VP and Chief Technology Officer, Weyerhaesuer Corporation
· Chen-Ching Liu, Boeing Distinguished Professor at WSU, founder WSU Energy Systems Innovation Center and a STARs researcher in smart grid.
· Paul Manson, President and CEO, Sea Breeze Power Corp.
· Denis Stevens, Consul General of the Canadian Consulate in Seattle
· Matt Morrison, CEO, Pacific Northwest Economic Region will moderate.
Panel Three deals with the hot topic on fostering entrepreneurship. Confirmed panelists include:
· Fred Holt, director of the Entrepreneur-in-Residence Program, UW Center for Commercialization
· Bryan Mistele, co-founder, president & CEO of INRIX, the leading global provider of traffic information and driver services.
· Connie Bourassa-Shaw, director of the University of Washington Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and manages the UW Business Plan Competition awarding over $1.3 million for 105 companies.
· Marc Nager, CEO and co-director of Startup Weekend which organizes 54-hour events where entrepreneurs share ideas, form teams, build products and launch start-ups.
· Luke Timmerman, Seattle editor for Xconomy and national biotech editor, will moderate.
· Chris Rivera, President, Washington Biotechnology & Biomedical Association (WBBA)
Panel Four gets to the heart of financing innovation and start-up companies. Confirmed panelists include:
· JP Michael, Senior Vice President and Regional Managing Director, Comerica Bank
· Matt McIlwain, Managing Director of Madrona Venture Group and Madrona Venture Fund V
· Dan Rosen, Alliance for Angels, CEO and President of Dan Rosen & Associates
· Kirk Washington, Partner, Yaletown Venture Partners
· Linden Rhoads, Vice Provost, UW Center for Commercialization
· Rick LeFaivre, Partner, OVP Venture Partners, and WEDC commissioner will moderate
Delegates to the summit are also invited to attend, at no additional cost, a fascinating look into Innovation and the Future Retailing. On Sept.18 "Titans of Innovation" kicks off at 6:30 p.m. featuring Rep. Phyllis Gutiérrez Kenney and Richard Galanti, Executive VP and CFO for COSTCO, a company founded in 1983 in Kirkland WA and now a $90 billion behemoth operating in United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Mexico, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, and the United States.
