Premier Brad Wall welcomes you to 22nd Annual Summit and the Premiers and Governors Roundtable

On behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan, I am pleased to welcome you to Saskatchewan for the 22nd Pacific NorthWest Economic Region (PNWER) Annual Summit July 15-19 in Saskatoon. PNWER Annual Summits provide an unparalleled opportunity for private and public sector leaders from Western Canada and Northwestern United States to work together to address the major issues impacting our region. One of the main issues of discussion and action has been the border - working to enhance trade flows and regional safety and security.

With the announcement of the Beyond the Border and Regulatory Cooperation Council Action Plans, the Saskatoon Summit will focus on how our region can provide leadership as we enter into a new phase of Canada-U.S. cooperation. I invite you to join the discussion. Saskatchewan joined PNWER in 2008 given the importance of the region in supporting Saskatchewan's export-dependent economy. Exports generate approximately 70 per cent of Saskatchewan's GDP and support jobs in the region's transportation sector. The highways, railways, and ports in Western Canada and Northwestern U.S. are vital for moving Saskatchewan's products to international markets. As such, Saskatchewan values the opportunities PNWER provides for open dialogue and relationship-building with decision-makers throughout the region.

I look forward to providing participants with an opportunity to learn why Saskatchewan is important to the PNWER region. At the Annual Summit, tours will be offered that highlight some of the province's world-leading export industries such as uranium (the world's richest reserves), fertilizer (the world's largest exporter of potash), and food (over 40 per cent of Canada's arable land). Working group sessions and policy tours will feature some of the province's world-class research capacity in areas like carbon capture and sequestration, food quality, agricultural productivity, human and animal safety, synchrotron science, and water security.

I hope you will also use this Summit as an opportunity to enjoy our beautiful province. With over 100,000 lakes and rivers teeming with fish and ready to be explored, world-class golf courses, shopping, and outdoor concert and theatre venues - this is a place like no other.

As this is Saskatchewan's first opportunity to host a PNWER Annual Summit, I look forward to providing a unique perspective on the region and a forum for new insight and innovative solutions on how to advance our regional economy.

Brad Wall

Premier

In addition to Premier Wall's keynote, Monday's luncheon at the Summit will feature an exciting roundtable discussion with state and provincial leaders, including:

Brian Schweitzer, Governor of Montana, is a farmer and rancher who never held elected office prior to January, 2005, when he was sworn in as the first Democratic Governor to serve Montana in 20 years. He has become a leading voice on national energy issues, particularly as they relate to domestic production of clean energy and fuels to replace foreign oil. Under his leadership Montana has put in place a renewable energy portfolio, the government has reduced its energy use by 20% and wind energy in Montana has boomed making Montana #1 in the nation in wind power growth. Montana is the fastest growing state in the nation in oil production, is second in the nation with growth in coal production and Montana has developed more new electrical generation capacity since Governor Schweitzer took office than the previous 20 years combined.

Darrell Pasloski, Premier of the Yukonwas elected leader of the Yukon Party on May 28, 2011 and was sworn in as premier on June 11, 2011. In addition to his duties as premier, he serves as Minister responsible for Executive Council Office and finance minister. He was elected to the Yukon Legislative Assembly in the general election of October 11, 2011 and was sworn into cabinet on November 5, 2011. Premier Pasloski began his political career in 2008 when he represented the Conservative Party of Canada in the 2008 federal election.

Canada invited to join
 Trans-Pacific Partnership talks

Canada was invited to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a game-changing regional trade arrangement that has the potential to spur economic growth around the Pacific Rim, June 19.

The federal government has taken an historic leap toward securing Canada's long-term strategic interests in the Asia-Pacific region. Now, over the next two decades, Asia's rapid growth will transform the global economy.

PNWER congratulates Prime Minister Stephen Harper, International Trade Minister Ed Fast and Canadian government officials across a number of departments for their efforts over the past several months to ensure Canada's entry to the TPP negotiations.
