The 2012 Summit: Engaging with Energy Opportunities and Challenges
The PNWER Summit offers a unique opportunity to tackle a variety of energy issues critical to ensuring a sustainable energy supply for North America. Session topics include trends in diversified energy sources, transmission regulatory changes, the new role of shale gas in the region, the adoption of natural gas vehicles, the emerging field of low-carbon technologies as well as the progress on aviation biofuels.
These sessions will provide in-depth expertise, the sharing of best practices, and networking opportunities. Session co-chairs and presenters will share their valuable perspectives on pertinent energy issues facing the Pacific Northwest. This is your opportunity to discuss action items for PNWER.
Sessions of Interest
Trends in Energy: Ensuring a Diversified Future
This session will several examine the implications of current regional trends on the renewable energy field, regulatory changes, and new transmission projects. The effect of low natural gas prices and fuel price volatility on the development of new renewable resources will be addressed. The developments in The Montana-Alberta Tie-Line, Mountain States Intertie Project, Juan de Fuca Cable and other storage projects will be featured.

The second part of the session will focus on the shale gas revolution in the terms of environmental challenges, government roles, and competitive advantage.

Developing a Low-Carbon Future
A panel of transportation and natural gas experts will investigate the role of natural gas vehicles in the trucking, rail, and marine industries. Return on investment and reduced operations cost will drive significant transition in freight mobility. The policy issues arising from wider adoption of NGV's in freight mobility will be the guiding concern of this session.

Aviation Biofuels
Join a discussion on regional opportunities and progress in the development of aviation biofuels. The session will identify opportunities for participation in the value chain for aviation biofuels and the co-chairs will facilitate a discussion on the development of a domestic biofuel industry in Canada. Panel participants will examine the best manner to include feedstock growers, bio-refineries, infrastructure pipelines, airports and airlines in the emerging field. The panel will highlight innovations and policies as well as identify cross-border collaborative opportunities.
Other exciting opportunities include over 14 work groups sessions, including transportation, water policy, and workforce sessions; and a number of exciting policy tours, including a visit to a working uranium mine. Keynote speakers
The Summit is a platform to tackle a variety of policy issues, from transportation challenges and cross-border livestock health, to energy sustainability. Summit keynote speakers will bring new thought, fresh dialog, and in-depth expertise to the issues facing the region.
This will include a keynote roundtable hosted by the Women in Natural Resources Working Groups, featuring:

Pamela Wallin, Canadian Senate (Tuesday Lunch), is a former television journalist and diplomat. On Jan. 2, 2009, she was appointed to the Canadian Senate, where she sits as a Conservative. She is also Chair of the Senate's National Security & Defense Committee, serves on both the Veterans Affairs subcommittee and the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Committee.

Brenda Kenny, President & CEO of the Canadian Energy Pipeli ne Association (Tuesday Lunch), is President and CEO of the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association (CEPA) where she works with industry partners to develop industry positions and advocacy related to a wide range of issues including safety, climate change, regulatory efficiency and financial competitiveness. Dr. Kenny has extensive experience in energy regulation, sustainable development and strategy. Prior to joining CEPA, she spent a number of years with the National Energy Board where she provided executive leadership in policy, regulatory reviews and finance.

John Hofmeiser, Founder and Chief Executive for Citizens for Affordable Energy (Tuesday Lunch), created and directs the nonprofit, nation-wide membership association, Citizens for Affordable Energy. This Washington, D.C.-registered, public policy education firm promotes sound U.S. energy security solutions for the nation, including a range of affordable energy supplies, efficiency improvements, essential infrastructure, sustainable environmental policies and public education on energy issues. The former president of Shell Oil Company and veteran of multiple industries for over 35 years, Mr. Hofmeister has held key leadership positions at General Electric, Nortel and AlliedSignal (now Honeywell International).
