Columbia River Treaty Symposium
|
The Columbia River Treaty between the United States and Canada has served as a model of international cooperation

since 1964, bringing significant flood control and power generation benefits to both countries. Planning is underway as the year 2014 approaches, which
is the earliest (10 years in advance of 2024) Canada or the United States can give notice regarding changes to or termination of the provisions of the Treaty -

The goal of the PNWER Columbia River symposium is to provide a forum to inform legislators and regional stakeholders about what has been done so far by both countries in preparation of 2014, and discuss how changes to the treaty might impact our region. The day long session will include a legislative roundtable discussion with states and provinces, including representatives from U.S. Tribes and Canadian First Nations, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Bonneville Power Administration, and the university consortium researching impacts of the treaty on the Bi-national region. Beyond the Border Working Group
Earlier this week, PNWER helped to host Deputy Commissioner David V. Aguilar of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and representatives from local shipping, transportation, and related businesses for a meeting on improving trade and security in the Pacific Northwest. In a round table discussion format, stakeholders discussed their concerns and suggestions for the 'Beyond the Border working group.
Commissioner Augilar urged the group to provide input and lauded PNWER for putting together a combined list of issues and recommendations that will advise the process. He explained that they were doing a series of listening sessions around the country, and that this is a great time to have an impact by providing stakeholder suggestions.
This meeting contributes to PNWER's ongoing efforts to support the implementation of pilots and solutions to enhance US-Canada trade , and our collective competitive position globally. Next month, we will host Ambassador David Jacobson in Seattle as well for a special listening session with public and private stakeholders on the Regulatory Cooperation Council, and the President and Prime Minister's 'Beyond the Border Work Group' (BBWG).
