Hot Afternoons Have Been in Montana is based on the 1925 Nation prize-poem by Eli Siegel, founder of Aesthetic Realism, the philosophy which arose from the way of seeing in this poem. When I first read the Hot Afternoons, I felt as if I were being taken on an exciting and meaningful odyssey around the world, and the world itself seemed coherent--made sense.

The idea for my film first came to me on the way to the bus stop from Tel Aviv to my Kibbutz, Gan Shmuel. As I walked from the platform onto the bus, the plot began to run through my head. I didn't have a pen on hand, and so, for the next 90 minutes on the road, I kept going over the story in my head, locking in each and every detail, so as not to forget a thing.

Congratulations to JAN-EJE FERLING for his film "LOSNINGEN / The Solution", winner of the Screenplay Award at the 2007 Golden Gate Fiction & Documentary Festival.

Sincerely,

Director
