Northshire Bookstore
October 2008

Greetings,

As we enter what may be a long-winding road of economic turmoil and uncertain times, there are pockets of inspiring, community-building endeavors in the world, including an experiment in melding publishing and local charity. The newly created non-profit Concord Free Press has launched a program to give a book away in exchange for the reader to make a voluntary donation to a local charity or individual in need.

The Press will publish two original books a year, with its entire print run distributed for free through independent bookstores and on their website, www.concordfreepress.com, where readers can chart where and how much they donate. The books are written by established authors; the Advisory Board includes authors Megan Abbott, Russell Banks, Gregory Maguire, and others.

The first book published in the program is Give + Take, about a jazz pianist thief, by Stona Fitch, author of Senseless. We have a limited supply available at the store. So, take a book, and give a little.

This month, we are hosting events that will inspire. On October 2nd, enjoy a screening of the latest Powell's Books "Out of the Book" film, State by State, featuring Alison Bechdel who will discuss her contribution to the book. On October 4th, join us for a day-long celebration of the freedom to read during Banned Books Week. On October 21st, we continue on the community theme with a screening of the documentary, Paperback Dreams, which chronicles the struggles of two landmark California independent bookstores, Cody's Books and Keplers, and ultimately, their value in the community. There are many more events and affordable books and gifts as we look ahead this season.

We appreciate your support of local businesses, and the integral role that independent businesses play in the economy.

Enjoy the foliage!

Marketing Director
