August 2008

Friends,

I hope your summer is going well. There is clearly a fundamental shift in the economy underway as we all get used to the end of cheap energy. High energy prices on top of the housing crisis, the credit crunch, and general inflation are making for some tough decisions. We are all having to cut back. This is a good time to realize, again, that books are a great value as a source for information, opinion and entertainment.

One little book can give you many, many hours of enjoyment and you can go back to it for years. You can travel the world with a book in the comfort of your own home. You can tap the accumulated wisdom of the centuries in a book. You can delve into the mysteries of the human condition in a book. You can experience the loves, losses and dynamics of the craziest families in a book. You can also find out that a 1909-S Indian head penny is worth $210 in a book. In other words, books have no bounds. Is there a better, more cost-effective way to spend time?

This month we have events that will engage, inspire and humble you including:
  • The party of the summer, the Breaking Dawn midnight release party, starting at 9pm, August 1st. Preorder your book before 11:30pm on August 1st and be entered into a drawing to win The Flip hand-held camcorder. Winner must be present to receive prize.
  • National TV comes to Manchester Center on Tuesday, August 5th when C-SPAN's "Campaign 2008" Book TV Bus visits the bookstore, interviews local authors Andrew Chaikin and Alex Kershaw, and will interview you about what you're reading this summer. From 4-6pm, take a tour of the mobile studio TV bus, before it travels out West to the national conventions.
Be well.

Chris
