Timely Tips April 2010:
Either One of the Best or Silliest Tips Yet!

*  Plus information on last public course option until August, great Google search tips, two bonus blog posts, and a couple conference programs coming up.
April 2010
Greetings!

Hi Everyone!  Yes, it has been a while.  The family and I took a vacation to Portland, Oregon to start the month, where I also presented at the Oregon Dental Association Annual Conference -- what a beautiful city and state!  And I came back to a very busy April, so I'm a bit late with this month's installment, but I think many of you will find it VERY handy (and a few will find this tip pretty silly.)  But even if you find it silly, take a look at the other blog site stories I've added in -- you might find some real value from this bonus content this month.  (Note the free streaming Internet radio program later this week in the closing block of the e-mail.)

SmartPhone User KEY Tip:
Dialpad Converter

This is the place to ALWAYS look to find your monthly Timely Tip.

How many times have you been using your SmartPhone (BlackBerry, Droid, Palm, IPhone, HTC, etc.) with your nontraditional keypad, and have seen a phone number that you couldn't call, because the phone number was in LETTERS and not NUMBERS!  (For example: 1-800-ONSTAR.)  Well, it is time to fix that problem forever!  This month's tip:  a simple letter to number converter, both in text here, and PDF and text links you can download to keep on your SmartPhone so you can now make those calls if needed.

2 - ABC
3 - DEF
4 - GHI
5 - JKL
6 - MNO
7 - PQRS
8 - TUV
9 - WXYZ

Here's the PDF link: http://www.randalldean.com/dialpad_converter.pdf

And here's the text file link:  http://www.randalldean.com/dialpad_converter.txt

If you are an Outlook user syncing with a SmartPhone, simply copy the text from the .txt document into one of your Notes, and then sync.  If you are not syncing notes to your SmartPhone, copy & paste to the notepad in your phone, or download the PDF doc if you have a PDF reader on your phone.  (Or just keep the link above in your "Bookmarks" on your phone's browser.) Then, you can make these phone calls even if away from your old landline.

Hey, these tips don't have to be rocket science!  They just have to save some of you time and aggravation!  I'm sure a few of you will find this one pretty silly, but for those of you that have ever run into this, I hope you find this a very helpful and "timely" tip.

I'm doing more on my blog!
Here are a couple blog posts you might find of interest:

For the last several years, I've been basically using my blog -- http://www.timely-tips.blogspot.com -- as a place to simply post my monthly newsletter online.  But in the last few months, I've decided to be more active with my Timely Tips blog.  First, I linked it to my Twitter feed (@timelyman -- please follow if you are a Twitter user), so you can see my much more frequent tweets.  Second, I've started to occasionally do longer form blog posts, whenever I see something I think might be of interest.  Here are a couple I've done in the last few weeks:

The first post is a discussion on dealing with chronic overwhelm, either personal or professional, through a simple "four-lever" solution set.  If you have been dealing with chronic overwhelm for some time now, this simple (but not necessarily easy) process may help you find the way:

The second post is a fun little personal story about how I used Outlook, my BlackBerry, and my GPS to get me to a client event right on time.  It just goes to show how you can use these tools to make everything "seamless".  Here is the post:

I welcome your participation and comments in this more active blog site.  And if you have ideas for a post of your own related to time, e-mail, office clutter, and/or related technology management, please let me know.  I'd love to get some people to do some guest posts now and then.
Busy, Busy, Busy! (And a Radio Show!)

After a nutty few weeks here in April, I've got a little time in the office this week to get caught up (yee haaa!!), except for my BlogTalk Radio guest spot on Rick Toquigny's Life Lessons show this Thursday at NOON!  Then, I'm back on the road for much of May.

I'll be at the Iowa Telecommunication Association Front Office & Marketing Conference in Des Moines next week talking Taming E-mail, returning to deliver a session on Finding an Extra Hour Every Day at the University of Michigan on May 6.  I'll be doing local client work here in East Lansing the following week, finishing the week doing "Taming E-mail & Office Clutter" AND "Finding an Extra Hour Every Day" for the GulfSouth Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants in Orange Beach, Alabama (no tropical storms please!!!! Yes, if you happen to be down that way, you can get a seat in this full day program!)  And I finish the month with the MWEA 3/4 day event to the right.

In June, I'll be speaking at Affordable Meetings West in Long Beach CA, and a week after that, I'll be a featured breakout speaker at the Graduate Management Admissions Council Annual Meeting in San Diego (here comes the Frequent Flier Miles!)  I'm really looking forward to seeing all of my old MBA Admissions friends at this one -- make sure to let me know if you'll be there.

Until we talk again, Stay Timely!

Sincerely,

Taming E-mail Beast Cover
More than just Taming E-mail, This Session Hits the "Big Three"!
For the second time this year, due to popular demand, I'll be leading a 3/4 day intensive for the Michigan Water Environment Association here at the Eagle Eye Golf & Banquet Facility in East Lansing, Michigan.

This 3/4 day event covers three of my key areas of content all on the same day:
1. Taming the E-mail Beast
2. Ending the Office Clutter
3. Optimizing Your Outlook (Strategies for using the OTHER Outlook functions besides E-mail! [Calendar, Task List, Notes, Contacts])

And, we'll be getting done in time so you could make a 4:00 tee time at one of the beautiful Hawk Hollow courses, as we come into the longest days of the year!

This course if being sponsored by the Michigan Water Environment Association, but you do not have to be an MWEA member to attend.  Here is the registration page, and you can see the promotional brochure with full course information by clicking on the link at the bottom of this page.

This will likely be MY LAST public course in Michigan until an event in late August, so if you'd like to catch this info, here is your best chance for a few months.
Two Very Useful Articles!
Google Geeks, This One Is For YOU!

Timely Tips reader and Facebook Friend Diane Mayers of MSU forwarded this great NY Times Technology Section article on 10 key tips for better using the search capabilities in Google -- this one is worth the entire e-newsletter this month!

And Something for Outlook Users!

Another regular Timely Tips reader, Tom Seng, shared this great article from WSJ Online on some "hidden" tools in MS Outlook (a few of which I teach in my programs, but even a couple I haven't been using!).

Please keep these coming -- these external resources are GREAT for the Timely Tips community (hey, we've got a community here, don't we?)
