Greetings to the Natural World                                                         Iroquois Thanksgiving address
Medicine Prayer
Medicine Prayer image from www.w1ndhorse.com

The People. Today we have gathered and we see that the cycles of life continue. We have been given the duty to live in balance and harmony with each other and all living things. So now, we bring our minds together as one as we give greetings and thanks to each other as people. Now our minds are one.

The Earth Mother. We are all thankful to our Mother, the Earth, for she gives us all that we need for life. She supports our feet as we walk about upon her. It gives us joy that she continues to care for us as she has from the beginning of time. To our mother, we send greetings and thanks. Now our minds are one.

The Waters. We give thanks to all the waters of the world for quenching our thirst and providing us with strength. Water is life. We know its power in many forms-waterfalls and rain, mists and streams, rivers and oceans. With one mind, we send greetings and thanks to the spirit of Water. Now our minds are one. Temple of the Goddess Celebrates Hallows with Ritual Theatre
By Joanne Elliott - LA Pagan Examiner
Kore and PsycheOctober 25th, 2010

This past Saturday in Pasadena, celebrants descended into the depths with Kore to discover their own personal myths. Temple of the Goddess is known for its professional mythical ritual theater productions and this Hallows they captured our imaginations again.

Before the myth enactment, those gathered were invited to leave behind the outer world. Through music and dance all were entranced into slowing down. Wendy Rule's song "Slow Down" was sung by Eryyka Jiminez as Kamala did a healing dance with a temple snake.

After the circle was cast, more music and dance followed, turning us all ever further inward, preparing us for the journey, the ritual theatre to follow. Another Wendy Rule song, "As Above So Below," was performed by Minni Jo Mazzola. She sang with a voice like dusk descending. A very pregnant Candy Jo Dahl danced as the Universe birthing the Earth. Not only can Minni Jo Mazzola sing, she also can dance and did so to the song "Witchwood" by Strawbs, accompanied by Ananda (temple Music and Choir Director) and Patrick Cleary on guitars with David Jacks on bass.

With the spoken word piece "The Dead Are Never Gone" by Birago Diop, performed by Zachary Tatum-Nolan, we descended into the story. He also directed the cast in the performance of the myth.

A highly stylized version of the Greek Goddess Kore, played by Briana Murray, paced the stage. Every now and then she looked toward a bright light, her destiny beckoning to her. A trickster crow, played by Patrick Humphrey, enters. In her contemplation she sat on a gray stone that turned out to be a mirrored man, Psyche (Soul), played by David Jacks. He and crow tried to help Kore understand that she must descend into the darkness, the unknown, her own unconscious to discover her true self. At one point a haunting voice is heard. A veiled figure drifts toward the stage. It was Kore's dead sister, played by Ananda, who sang a song of encouragement, "Your Soul is a Lantern in the Dark" by Wendy Rule. Kore was hesitant and almost deterred by crow's raucous warnings about chaos and change. Finally she found courage and with a gift of a compass and a journal headed toward her destiny. click to read more...

Wendy - Benefit Concert 1

Wendy Rule LA benefit concert for       Temple of the Goddess a success!

By Joanne Elliott of the LA Pagan Examiner

First, an opening set was played by Ananda (Cheryl Lynn Caddick), the Temple of the Goddess' Music and Choir Director, and Patrick Cleary, both of Silver Phial. It ended with Ananda on the harmonium, singing Chrissie Hynde's "Hymn to Her." Lyrics include: "They will keep on speaking her name," perfect for that night.

Then Wendy and Tim Van Diest, who is both her boyfriend and guitar accompanist, came on stage. Wendy opened by casting a circle with "The Circle Song" from her Wolf Sky CD. Since the stars look different in the southern hemisphere, Wendy noted she also wrote a Northern Hemisphere version. But she lamented that she can't find the recorded Northern version, so if you downloaded it in the past, she hopes you will email it back to her so she can put it on MySpace again for free download by fans.

The beautiful gown Wendy wore was something she made herself for the launch party of her latest CD, "Guided by Venus." She has six full length CDs to her credit and in two 45-minute sets performed songs from a number of them.

The moon shined brightly on everyone gathered under the oaks and inspired Wendy as she sang "My Sister the Moon." Many of her other songs draw upon nature themes, too. She tells the story of extreme heat the previous summer in her native Australia and how on a bike path she found a baby tiger snake coiled and dead, dehydrated and perfectly preserved by the hot sun. The preserved snake now rests on her home altar so she can contemplate it and learn from its energy. Though saddened by its passing, she expressed gratitude for "these gifts. It's such a beautiful symbol of life and death."

8 The Mormon Proposition - A Review by Briana Murray 8 The Mormon Proposition

This documentary, written by Reed Cowan, places a giant spotlight on the Mormon Church's overwhelming involvement in the planning and major financing of California's Proposition 8.  Although some see this film as "preaching to the choir" or unfairly portraying the Mormon Church and its followers, I can tell you as a "choir member" this film does its job in creating an awareness of just how deep the church's involvement was and is in many other cases across our nation; information I was unaware of before seeing this film.

Yes, many were aware that it was the Mormon Church that was behind the numerous commercials which misinformed and misled California voters, but how many knew that leaders of the church were making plans to squash a growing acceptance of gay marriage in California over a decade ago, or that from the onset of their planning, the church was adamant about not being "seen" as the force behind this effort?   Written in what some may consider language of a conspiracy theorist, the film justly brings to light the conspiratorial actions of the Mormon Church.

This film also does well to ask the all-important question: Why does the Mormon Church continue to receive tax-exempt status, when to receive such status a religious organization must not, according to the IRS Tax Guide for Churches and Religious Organizations (Publication 1828), "influence legislation as a substantial part of its activities"?  As the film points out, the church's volunteer efforts and financial support for the passing of Prop. 8 were incredibly substantial.

The last portion of this film is dedicated to pointing out the severe effects discrimination has on many in the gay community, like suicide and homelessness, especially among its youth and those growing up in the Mormon Church. The film jumps to this portion almost like a skip in a record, but its impact is still strong.   I would recommend that anyone concerned with Human Rights or the Separation of Church and State take an evening to sit and watch, then discuss this very informative and powerful film.

Schools get go-ahead to teach
Pagan
ism alongside major religions.

By Daily Mail Reporter

November 9, 2010

A council is allowing its schools to teach Paganism to pupils, it emerged today. Lincolnshire County Council raised the issue of whether Paganism should be added to the Religious Education curriculum at a recent meeting. The county's RE advisor questioned whether study of Pagan doctrine should be added to the six world religions currently studied in schools. It was decided that individual schools can choose whether they wish to teach Paganism to pupils or not. Minutes from a meeting of the Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education revealed the bizarre discussion.

It reads: 'The RE advisor reported she had looked into the query about Paganism forming part of the school curriculum.

'It was determined this covered a broad range of beliefs and practices. However, there was no direct guidance about whether it should be included, and it was left to the individual schools to make the decision about whether to include it. 'The RE adviser told the committee she would keep her eye on the situation and report back should there be any developments.'

Paganism, which encompasses many non-Christian religious traditions, celebrates nature and worships many deities, both goddesses and gods.

Pagans view the cycle of the natural year as a model of spiritual growth and renewal and celebrate festivals at important times of the year.  Click here for more...

Can Civilization Survive Without God?
A Conversation with Christopher and Peter Hitchens, Event transcript - October 12, 2010

The Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life invited brothers Christopher and Peter Hitchens to address the question of whether civilization needs God.

Christopher Hitchens is the author of more than 10 books, including his recent memoir Hitch-22 and the best-selling manifesto God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything. Peter is the author of four books including the recently published The Rage Against God: How Atheism Led Me to Faith, which he wrote to counter Christopher's book, God Is Not Great. At a luncheon for journalists, the Pew Forum invited the Hitchens brothers to address the question of whether civilization needs God.  Click here for full transcript . . .

You are sitting around a fire after a hard day of work. The air cools and the sun sets, the frogs and crickets begin singing as the sky darkens. Suddenly the person you have been eagerly awaiting leaps to the center of the circle. You have heard the story a hundred times, but the antics of the animals and the wisdom in the story never fail to give you pleasure. As she weaves her tale, the knowledge that every thing is alive, carrying its own power and wisdom, soothes your soul.

Let us join together, in this virtual circle, and share these Animal Tales. Let us once again feel how the stories connect us to the natural world and remind us that we are all part of a vast Circle of Life. Listen now as the Shaman whispers tales of animal power and wisdom in your ear.

Tonight it is a tale from the Native Americans living in California. It is a cautionary tale of power and how even the very smallest among us can have a mighty influence.

Cricket and the Mountain Lion
Retold by Jane Louise Curry

Cricket was proud of his house. It was small and round and snug, and sat in a shady spot safely away from the deer trail. Cricket had built it himself of mud and dung and fine grass, then rolled it into place beside a rotten log, and settled in.

One day Mountain Lion, out hunting, came stepping softly down the deer trail. Not far from Cricket's house, his nose told him that a rabbit had crossed the path a moment before, and so he turned aside. As he padded past the rotten log, Mountain Lion heard a tiny shout.

"Hai, friend Lion! Stop where you are and step aside! That is my house. One more step and your paw will crush it."

Mountain Lion looked around to see who had spoken. When he spied little Cricket atop the log, he laughed. And then he roared until the leaves on the trees trembled.

"Miserable little creature!" he screamed. "Do you mean to tell me where I may walk? I am Mountain Lion. Not even Eagle can command me. Because I am strong and smart and swift, the forest is mine. And yet you dare to tell me where to step!" Continued . . .

Monthly Celebrations are held on the night of the Full Moon, unless listed otherwise. Time for Moon Lodge is 7-10:00pm. Led by temple Priestess, Pythia

Upcoming Dates:
  • December 21
Moon Children are those born under the Zodiac sign of Cancer. But in reality, we are all Moon Children. We live half of our lives in the light of Grandmother Moon. She, like Mother Earth, has power. She shows us her power with the rising and falling tides caused by lunar gravitational pull interacting with specific attributes of our oceans. She shows us her power by lengthening the calendar 15 microseconds every year. And finally, she shows us her power by women's reproductive cycle.

At the Full Moon Celebration we will draw down Lunar Power to aid us in releasing that which no longer serves us, thereby actively creating room for an increased abundance in our lives. So, join us as we honor Grandmother Moon, using sacred tools in sacred space to create magick in order to enjoy a more fulfilling life.

Bring a blanket to snuggle in and a treat to share during after-ritual chat time. Click here for more information about Temple of the Goddess Full Moon Celebration, and a pdf flyer or email [email protected]  or phone: 818-771-5778. Picture Courtesy of Isquiesque.

petroglyphTrance Journey Through Drumming
Class offered by Temple of the Goddess. Class resuming in 2011.

This is not a "learn how to drum" class, but deep meditation instruction. In this class you will learn about Shamanism and what a Shaman does when she or he moves into a trance and enters another reality. If you've wanted a different way of meditating to "sort things out" then this might work for you. In addition to the trance work, the class will study various topics including:
  • Shamanic Trance Drumming-what it is and where it has been in practice.
  • Spirit Guides-how to obtain one and what a Guide does for you.
  • Relevancy of Shamanic Trance Drumming in today's world.
Classes led by Pythia, Temple of the Goddess priestess and a practioner of Shamanic Trance Drumming for 19 years. Classes ongoing. For dates and times, contact [email protected] and put Trance Journey in the subject. Click here for more info and a downloadable pdf flyer.
