| New Phosphate Binders on the Horizon |
Hyperphosphatemia (high phosphorus level) is common among end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. Dietary restriction and removal by dialysis are usually ineffective in controlling phosphorus levels, so ESRD patients are often prescribed phosphate binders. Current phosphate binders are effective but can have adverse effects, are expensive, and require patients to take many pills. For these reasons, noncompliance with phosphate binder therapy is a problem among ESRD patients.
Efforts are under way to develop new phosphate binders. These include exchange resins, iron-based binders, magnesium binders, and nicotinic acid derivatives. These new treatments are being evaluated and when approved, they will give patients a wider range of phosphate binders to chose from. |
| High-Salt Diet Dampens Effects of Blood Pressure Drugs |
A new study found a high-salt diet can reduce the effectiveness of blood pressure medications. Patients on a low-salt diet had a drop of 22.7 points in systolic blood pressure and 9.1 points in diastolic blood pressure. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for kidney disease, heart attack, stroke and other problems. Heavy salt intake contributes to the problem. Doctors recommend eating fresh foods, avoiding processed foods, which are high in salt, and following the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, which is low in salt and fat and high in fiber. |

Improved Nutrition After Switching to Nocturnal Home Hemodialysis |
|
Researchers found switching patients to nocturnal home hemodialysis treatments had a positive effect on their nutritional state. Patients could drink more fluids, and their appetite and energy level improved. Protein, serum phosphate, calcium and potassium intake increased, and lab results were excellent without the need for phosphate binders. The results appear in the Journal of Renal Nutrition.

| Tip of the Month: Reducing Your Sodium Intake |
In patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), excess salt and fluid can build up in the body. This can cause swollen ankles, puffiness, a rise in blood pressure and shortness of breath. Here are some tips on how to reduce the amount of salt in your diet:
- Use fresh garlic, fresh onion, black pepper or vinegar to season foods.
- Limit use of processed foods.
- When eating out, ask for sauce or gravy on the side. These are usually high in sodium.
- Read food labels and know how much sodium you are allowed per day.
