Sprout Lake Camper Makes A Difference
Jordyn Waye at Fun Run

Sprout Lake is always excited when our very own campers do something special to make a difference!

On November 13, 2010, Jordyn Waye, 4th grade CYJSL camper, participated in the 12th Annual Ronald McDonald House Kids Charity Fun Run in Central Park to benefit the Ronald McDonald House of NY. The Ronald McDonald House is a home-away-from-home for children who have cancer and their families. It provides children and their families a home, food, and support while getting cancer treatments at local hospitals. Jordyn and her fellow classmates visited the Ronald McDonald House of NY in the fall and gained a real understanding of the important services this organization provides. Prior to that, Jordyn had developed a habit of giving toys and raising money on her own to benefit the Ronald McDonald children. Two years ago, Jordyn drew pictures with a friend and sold them on the beach and in the lobby of our building to raise additional money for the children.

This was Jordyn's 5th year participating in the Charity Fun Run. Thirty-three other students from her school participated this year and, in total, they raised $6,818.00  Out of that, Jordyn raised $3,018.00 of it through an email to family and friends soliciting their support.  She was struck by how much one person could accomplish on their own and wanted to share the concept of everyone doing their part to achieve higher goals and help more people.  As a result, she asked to address her entire school and parent body at an all school assembly and discuss the importance of participating. She did so in December 2010, and was received with great applause!!!

We are so proud of Jordyn for making a difference!

CYJ Sprout Lake is proud to announce the findings of the Foundation for Jewish Camp's (FJC) newest study, Camp Works.  This study,
the most comprehensive analysis of the impact of Jewish camp, offers the strongest evidence that a summer at a non-profit, Jewish camp, like CYJ Sprout Lake, leads to significantly stronger adult Jewish engagement.  FJC LogoCamp works!

CYJ Sprout Lake Legacy: Spotlight on Norman and Elaine Teitcher

Norman and Elaine TeitcherCYJ Sprout Lake is proud to highlight volunteers, Norman and Elaine Teitcher.  Norman and Elaine joined the CYJ Sprout Lake Legacy Program by committing to include CYJ Sprout Lake in each of their wills.  From the first year of the Friends of CYJ Sprout Lake board in 2002, the Teitchers have gone above and beyond the call of duty to help camp in every way possible.  However, the story behind the Teitchers involvement in CYJ Sprout Lake goes deeper than their service as Friends of CYJ Sprout Lake.

In the early 1920's, Norman's father joined with the Chalutzim, or Pioneers, in Palestine, to live and work the land of Jewish ancestry.  He then went to Europe to meet his wife (Norman's mother), and brought her back to Palestine to begin their family there.  After Norman's older siblings were born in Palestine, the family made their way to the United States.  This move was difficult for Norman's father, because of he found it more difficult to instill Zionistic values in his children.

Norman's father did impart those values to him, as Norman recalls his participation in a pre-cursor to Birthright in 1962, years living in Israel, and taking his family on vacations to Israel.  Furthermore, when Norman and Elaine had to select a camping program for their children, they chose Young Judaea.

Jonathan and Arielle spent a few summers at Tel Yehudah, and spent several summers working at CYJ Sprout Lake.  Elaine has also served as a staff member at CYJ Sprout Lake, as the Camp Mom from 2004-2008.  "Sprout Lake is part of the story.  We love Sprout Lake, and we love the Young Judaea movement.  It's part of our family," said Norman Teitcher.

It all came together for the Teitcher family when Jonathan Teitcher, Norman and Elaine's eldest child and staff member at CYJ Sprout Lake for 11 summers, made aliyah and became an Israeli citizen in 2009.  Norman and Elaine recall that, "...he said to us a long time ago that it was special for him that he was now living in Israel, a land where his grandfather had come and his grandfather loved."

We are so proud that CYJ Sprout Lake has been such an integral part of the Teitcher family story.  Furthermore, we are so proud that Norman and Elaine have been such an important part of camp's story.  And, with their commitment to the Legacy Program, they have taken steps to ensure that CYJ Sprout Lake can continue building Jewish and Zionistic identity among the next generation.

A strong Jewish future begins at CYJ Sprout Lake.  The Legacy Program is the best way to endow the future of CYJ Sprout Lake.  We invite all camp families, staff, and alumni to commit to the Legacy Program.  For more information about how you can join the Teitchers in their long-term support for CYJ Sprout Lake and participation in the Legacy Program, please contact us via e-mail (click here) or at 212-451-6233.
